"The rumors have been swirling the past week or so and I was finally able to get some context regarding the situation. This is directly from a former UD player (a 1K point scorer that still resides in Ohio). It's offered with no ill will or dubious motivation.
There is a lot of grumbling going on about Juwan transferring. His father is in everyone's ear 24/7 that he wants him gone and has even put the pressure on BG in game situations to incorporate him more in the offense to satisfy needs. Juwan just likes to play and doesn't want to leave ... so there is an internal family struggle on his future here.
It got so bad, that even before the Richmond game Billy was in BG's office demanding that Staten start since the game was on national TV. There is an internal struggle with BG and Juwan's father and BG is growing very irritated and it is in my honest opinion that is why Kevin Dillard is here, just in case. I believe this may become a BG v. Juwan's Family type of deal, and while Juwan loves it here and has no intention of leaving, the family may force him.
Do with this information what you will. Take it as gospel and pass it on or print it out, roll it up and smoke it. I don't give a *****. Just relaying information I got from a very knowledgeable horse's mouth. Someone in position to know something about the evolving situation."

That would be a big blow to them and one more reason for Flyers fans to be down on BG.Staten looks like he could be a top flight point guard which Dayton has been sorely lacking.

Man, I am not a fan of big-ego dads. Staten sounds more level-headed by this blurb, and his dad just needs to stop vicariously living through his son.

Re: Rumors that Juwan Staten is transferring out of UD
This is the one time I kinda feel bad for BG.. Staten is a good talent but come on, the kid is a freshman so just because he isn't starting doesn't mean he can't reach his potential. This is just a bad scenario. It's Juwan's life and if he wants to stay then he should stay. I realize the importance of the family but its his future in jeapordy. Dayton needs him bad but he is going to go through growing pains as a freshman point guard in college basketball. I've never heard of a dad being in a college basketball coach's office before a game like this. BG needs to take control of the situation and I'm sure he's sat down privately with Juwan to discuss this issue.
Enjoy the season of March.. it only comes around once a year!

Transfer rumors often seem to pop during the season at tough points for teams. The vast majority of the time, they don't materialize.
If Staten does bolt, Gregory's job security would drop dramatically.

Stanten was really sick on Tuesday, and his play hurt the team. I believe Stanten is Wright"s cousin and buddies with Benson, so I don't think he is going anywhere. I hope he leaves, but probably not.

Re: Rumors that Juwan Staten is transferring out of UD
If the details of this rumor are true, I don't see why UD fans would be down on BG for standing up to Staten's father over this. No coach in his right mind would, or should, EVER let the parent of one of his players dictate playing time. If anything, fans would be upset if he DID cave to Staten's father. I certainly hope that Staten stays at UD. He is fun to watch, and a credit to the league.bluegrass wrote:That would be a big blow to them and one more reason for Flyers fans to be down on BG.Staten looks like he could be a top flight point guard which Dayton has been sorely lacking.
Xavier always goes to the NCAA tournament, and almost always makes some noise while there. Projecting anything less than that this season feels like folly--Eamonn Brennan (ESPN Summer Shootaround, 2012)

Re: Rumors that Juwan Staten is transferring out of UD
I agree, I don't think UD fans would blame BG for sticking to his guns against an egocentric dad. However, fans are annoyed with BG in general, and Staten could be a player who will help ensure his continued employment. If he leaves, BG is in trouble.X-man wrote:If the details of this rumor are true, I don't see why UD fans would be down on BG for standing up to Staten's father over this. Knowing how fickle we fans are, UD supporters would likely back BG if he chooses to stand up to the Dad....but then call for BG's head when the team suffers because of Staten's absence.
