MEMPHIS, one top ten win and one top ten loss. like it or not, the fact that we haven't beaten any top ten teams is going to keep us off the top line, and probably off the second line. if we ended up as a #4 seed, we honestly couldn't say that we had beaten anyone who ended up with a better seed. louisville had a similiar resume in 2005 and ended up with a #4 seed. get mentally prepared to be dissapointed.
don't misunderstand me. i'm not saying we're not good enough. i'm not saying we shouldn't get it. i'm saying that based on how the committee evaluates teams, we probably won't. top 50 wins are important in terms of making the field, but top ten wins are important for #1 and #2 seeds, and xavier doesn't have any of those.

I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

For those of you who disbelieve that XU can get a number one seed answer this question: Has there ever been a team that had 30 wins, rpi in the top 4-6, ranked the top 8 in the country, won both their division and conference tournment and has not gotten a number one seed?

louisville had 29 wins in 2005, was ranked #4 in the country, won conference usa (which was similiar to this year's atlantic ten), won the tournament, and received a #4 seed. granted, they didn't have 30 wins, but i don't think one win would make the difference between a #1 and a #4. they also played fewer games that year than teams do now.millersdad wrote:For those of you who disbelieve that XU can get a number one seed answer this question: Has there ever been a team that had 30 wins, rpi in the top 4-6, ranked the top 8 in the country, won both their division and conference tournment and has not gotten a number one seed?
you're confusing "do we deserve it??" with "will we get it??" we won't get it. to be honest, i wouldn't be surprised if we didn't get a #2 seed either.
that same louisville team went to the final four, though, so i wouldn't be too worried about it. it always feels good to get a good seed, but the important thing is to win once we're in regardless of what seed we get. even if the committee does screw us, at least we get a chance to play, unlike football.
muskieman, call it a hunch, but i think memphis has a HUGE backing from the nabc right about now. also, one top ten win is a lot more than none.

Re: XU Can get a # 1 seed
Today, Rhode Island is the 8 seed. That would be ideal as X would face them in the quarterfinal. UMass could end up either the 4 or 5, and that would make the most likely candidate for the semifinals. Put St. Joe's in the finals, and all of a sudden, a 16 game winning streak, a regular season title, a conference title, and a sweet resume, hey, this team would be on the short list for one of the #1 seeds. But even then, they would need help.

brew, I am not saying X can get a #1, in fact I think that is a pipe dream and will not happen. What I was saying that there are teams that will probably get a #1 that don't deserve it. I think the way you look at it Duke's talent doesn't derserve them anything better than a 3 or 4 but they will probably get a lower seed.
Like I always say give the #1 to someone else and let us win every game we play in the tourney.

Lemme make sure I understand this, Xavier is more deserving of a one seed than Duke AND Duke is less talented?muskieman wrote:brew, I am not saying X can get a #1, in fact I think that is a pipe dream and will not happen. In my opinion the 4 teams that are probably #1 seeds are Tennessee, Memphis, North Carolina and then Texas or Georgetown, if Georgetown wins out.
I am really curious to hear which of those 4 (or 5, I guess) teams do you think Xavier would trump as "more deserving" or even "more talented", if you would rather.

Re: XU Can get a # 1 seed
the one thing about memphis's resume on paper is that all of their monster wins came at home. they do have some notable neutral floor wins, but they don't have as many big time wins as some other teams. that being said, if they win out i believe they'll get a #1. part of the selection process that no one talks about is the NABC advisors. when all the coach's in memphis's region are asked who they think the best team in the region is, the near unanimous answer will probably be memphis, and if you've seen them play this season more than just once or twice, you'd understand why. that's going to carry quite a bit of weight.

As much as I'd like it, there's not a snowballs' chance in hell that we get a #1 seed.
I know it's an entirely different landscape than it was 5 years ago, but St. Joe's lost to only us in the regular season and even they BARELY got a #1 seed to the great questioning of the national media.
I think a #2 is quite possible, but a #3 is most likely. I think we lose to St. Joe's and win out in Atlantic City.

seeing how you quoted me I assume you are talking to me but what I can not understand is how you get that I think X will get a #1. As far as Duke, you bet I think X can defeat Duke on a neutral floor. Duke has not impressed me in any of the games I have seen them play even the ones they won. They are a team that sometimes plays D and sometimes doesn't. They shoot from the three and are not always consistent. YES I think X can beat them.
I do not think Memphis deserves a #1. They have some great players and they played a great game in a loss to Tenn but their weakness at the foul line does not make them a complete team and they play D like your team is sitting at the top of the big least. Memphis reminds me of the LMU teams when they tried to outscore you rather than learn defense.

Re: XU Can get a # 1 seed
I would just as soon not exert the energy of running the table to try for a No. 1 seed. If we lose in the A10, and get a 2 or a 3, that's ok. Match ups are way more important than seeds.
