Nice spin, perhaps you can get a job after graduation as a political pundit. However, no matter how you try to slice and dice it, Martelli's comments were unconscionable. You can sell that crap to someone else, I'm not buying it.letsgoxu wrote:I will begin by saying that my understanding of "Sonofab*tch" is just fine, as I use it frequently in conversation.sigma wrote:

letsgoxu, What part of Sonofabi*** don't you understand? Reading comprehension is fundamental to understanding. When was the last time you heard a coach compliment a player by calling him a SOB (in public). Even Bobby Knight (as unorthodox as he was) had enough class not to call a player, from an opposing team a SOB. Maybe you should look up the word compliment in the dictionary, there is nothing courteous or respectful about calling someone a SOB. Even a back-handed compliment is nothing more than an indirect verbal attack. I happen to see Martelli's interview when he berated Burrell, and his demeanor was mean spirited instead of jovial.
Martelli was bitter and pis**ed off because of the loss to XU and decided to lash out at a kid who was a key element in SJU's defeat...........It is what it is.
Secondly, my comprehension skills are just fine, as the degree I am about to receive from X will indicate. Beyond that, I have also learned some things about context in my 4 years here. Phil Martelli complimented the play of Stanley Burrell. There was absolutely nothing demeaning about what he said at all. What he said may have been unprofessional, but even that is a stretch in my opinion. Of course, someone wouldn't go into a business meeting saying things like that; but in a post game interview, it wasn't really that big of a deal. He doesn't owe anyone an apology. Stan B's feelings weren't hurt.
Martelli making comments about Burrell being in school for 9 years is simply saying that it seems like Burrell has been dominating his team for longer than he really has.

My goodness Sigma..lighten up a hair will you?
Stan thought it was a compliment
99% of the Xavier fan base thought it was a compliment
Miller had no issue with it
Xavier's Administration had no issue with it
Yet you in your ultimate wisdom feel the need to lecture us on decorum. Either you are just tyring to stir the pot or you're the biggest ego maniac on this board...and that says a lot.
Do you realize that you're not only in the minority when it comes to your opinion on this topic, you are the ONLY person who believes what Phil said to be non-complementary. It it truly an abberration when the board is able to unite like this. Congrats on making that happen!

I am going to take a stab at this and guess that sigma may possibly be a younger man. If he is 40+, then just an idiot.

What's really bizarre about this already nonsensical thread is that "Sigma" is a Charlotte fan. This exact same debate is taking place on the 49er message board, and in fact, at least one of Sigma's messages is a direct cut and paste from one board to the other.
So, to be sure, a Charlotte fan is on a Xavier board complaining about the St. Joe's coach. Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.

He was also not getting any support on the Charlotte board the last I looked.Michigan Muskie wrote:What's really bizarre about this already nonsensical thread is that "Sigma" is a Charlotte fan. Sigma needs to see the Seinfeld episode where the Astros execs come visit the Yankees and George is in charge of taking them out. Then maybe he'll better understand Martelli's comments.
Unfortunately, sigma/oldskool will likely just continue being an idiot. Oh, well. The world needs ditchdiggers too.

I am sure that many fans were like me when they heard those comments. I, for one, empathized with Martelli. We can all think of some player that was always a thorn in Xavier's side. It seemed like Peppy Sanchez was at Temple for 10 years. He always killed Xavier.
We as Xavier fans should understand Martelli. Who didn't wish for Pat Carroll to graduate?

You got to be ball ready when "showtime" Sherwin Anderson is on the floor.

You might want to check out the following post Smails:Original Smails wrote: Do you realize that you're not only in the minority when it comes to your opinion on this topic, you are the ONLY person who believes what Phil said to be non-complementary. I felt this was wrong to say. He basically called Stan's mom a bitch. I think if he would have left that phrase out it would have been a bit more funny.

Well, I've had my fun. But seriously, soccer mom!
soccer mom
And by the way, I am pretty sure that almost everyone (and that includes Stanley) realizes that Martelli said that tongue-in-cheek. In other words, he definitely meant it as a compliment. I see no reason why I should defend a Xavier player who was being complimented.
