Agreed. Martelli's language is mild for the area he lives in.XavierMatt wrote:Coach Martelli embodies Philadelphia. If you haven't been to Philly, that quote might shock you. I bet even the priest that sits on their bench got a chuckle out of that one.

Biff Tannen wrote:I want to go as far as saying that Martelli is the best coach in the A10, the guy can spot talent, and he can coach it. He has to compete with all 23 other Philly schools for the same recruits, and he never seems to get many big time recruits, yet his teams are always competitive. For as bad as the talent level is in the A10, Martelli is at least a BCS caliber coach.
Tell that to John Chaney and to Billy (I'm Back from Puking) Packer. I agree with you Bill, totally. Just being a wise a$$.
Also, I have no problem with Martelli's comment. I don't imagine it'll get past the Enky editors, but who knows.

After Bob Knight (and I love him), Phil's comments were tame.

Coach Martelli and St. Joe's=gracious, classy, humble and respectful. A true reflection of the "Jesuit Tradition." Kinda hard not to like them even when they have beaten us in the past. Nevertheless, I will always bleed Xavier blue. Even my wife (a Miami grad) bleeds a little blue rather than all red.

Please... Get over it. It was funny. And a compliment.XURunner85 wrote:I have alot of respect for the St Joes program and Martelli and I know he was trying to be funny but I did not think it appropriate for him to say, "I want to make sure that sonofbitch graduates". I felt this was wrong to say. He basically called Stan's mom a bitch. I think if he would have left that phrase out it would have been a bit more funny.

I don't take any offense whatsoever at Martelli's comments. He's always been very complimentary towards X, and was doing so here, but with some salty language thrown in for emphasis. We'll all done the same thing, i.e., "that SOB made everything he threw up", indicating how well the guy played, not insulting him.
And I would hope that we would not have brought up the "when he called me a motherf****r, he insulted my mother!" argument. Any of us who've used the term, or even "son of a *****" know that we're NEVER referring to that person's Mom, we're insulting HIM.
But, again, Martelli's comments were nothing but complimentary, as usual, and that's how we should take them.

I saw the video on Channel 19 of Martelli's post game press conference where he said all this. There was absolutely no ill will intended. He was being very complimentary towards the University, the players, and Coach Miller, which is what I would expect from Coach Martelli. The guy's a class act.LA Muskie wrote:Please... Get over it. Golf is a relatively simple game, played by reasonably intelligent people, stupidly.

"Class " is in again
Have "class" and "class act" been taken off the triple-secret-never-use-on-MM probation list?
Whoopie!
Drew is a class guy. What a classic shot from the corner for BJ. That Josh Duncan is all class.
Martelli, while funny and perhaps a class act in Philly, can be abrasive and not so classy with the best of them. I've heard some pretty salty sarcastic tirades at the heckling fans behind the visitor's bench over the years.

Re: Martelli's comments at Cintas???
To say that Coach Martelli's comment was compimentary is ludicrous to say the least. Calling Burrell a SOB is unconscionable, and I fail to find humor in it. If he wanted to compliment Stan he could have done so without the sarcasm, he was merely bitter about loosing to XU and took out his frustration on Burrell.Mr. Neutral wrote:I don't take any offense whatsoever at Martelli's comments. If his statement was meant to be a compliment, why didn't he say: "that god*** Coach Miller" , or call Coah Miller a Sonofabit**? You know as well as I do that Coach Miller would not have accepted those insults as compliments and neither should Burrell or the XU fans. When Martelli complimented Miller and the basketball program he did so with respect, but then when he resorted to calling Burrell's mom a Bit** we give him a pass, and make excuses for him. He has no class.
This is the A10, not some pick-up B- ball game in a school yard, or Rec center in Philly. Martelli needs to leave that language in the streets where it belongs...It aint cute.
