Odom officially enters the portal

Postby longliveskip » Mon Apr 04, 2022 11:02 am

Dwon Odom officially enters the transfer portal.

not gonna read TOO much into his statement but if he talked with Miller AND family, did he not get a ringing endorsement from Miller that he would be our starting PG moving forward? i mean, i know Miller can't "guarantee' that but Odom seemed primed to be in that role for X for the next two years so either Miller doesn't like his game (i don't like that we don't have a PG that is a threat from 3 either) but i love Odom's game.

Godspeed to him wherever he lands.

I would think Sean wants guards who can shoot the 3.I can't understand, particularly in this day and age, how you can get to this point and have such a poor outside shot. And the weird thing is he's not bad from 12' in

Sorry to see this, but like KyKy he could come back. Probably didn’t want to be know only as a defensive specialist and he saw how Jones and Kunkel were being used in the NIT. With the pg recruit and KyKy still in the mix, he was one of five.

With his free year, he still has 3 years of eligibility. I suspect he will get plenty of interest. Hope he reconsiders.

Could Miami become Xavier Lite? Odom, Miles, Fremantle, etc.

I think the one thing we can be assured of is that Sean, a former point guard himself, can find point guards that he needs. Odom wants something different and may find it somewhere else. He may look and then come back and think I can still do it for Sean. Either way, I wish him much success unless he is playing X.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

Miles maybe, Odom probably wants to head south, can't imagine Free would leave to play in the MAC, especially at a Who Cares ? place like Miami.

I suspect he would be in demand at schools that play fast and full court D; schools that don’t rely on the 3. Maybe Alabama, Arkansas even Texas A & M. Coaches like Smart, Cronin, or Anderson could use a disrupter and high-flying dunker like Odom. Of course I think we could use him as well. He thrived against schools that allowed him to go downhill.

I suppose the question that most recruits need to answer would be…do I want to play 20 minutes for a true team that might win a championship or 35 and be the guy?

As I said before, good luck. Unlike previous transfers, Odom was a contributor not bench warmer.

Disappointing but I wish him well.

I think Sean definitely wanted him back. Very high IQ player who passes well, and is very efficient from 8 feet and in. He wasn't as great defensively as I thought he would be, and often got eaten up by skilled, quick guards. Nevertheless, it's a loss. and won't be the last. I do think the timing was a little curious (Desmond commits, then he leaves), and also heard from a family member with inside info that Kobi Simmons (former pg at AZ who left for the NBA his freshman year and didn't get drafted) and his family thought he wasn't used right, and that may have hurt his pro prospects. Odom and Simmons are close.

I think Free is definitely gone, and while I'd like him back, his defensive deficiencies really neutralize his ability on the offensive end. Best of luck to Odom. Great kid, and a great ambassador for X. I hope he kills it and realizes his dream of going to the NBA. X will recover, especially with the coach with the 6th best winning percentage in the NCAA among active coaches. Matta is 4th. Talk about a great coaching lineage.

Hate to see Odum go. Loved his attitude and explosion. I think his decision was based on Hayes probably leaving. Guys choose schools based on coaches. He's from the south and probably homesick. He had a edge to him that will be missed. Hope he lands somewhere that will let him get out and run. One of my favorites and wish him nothing but the best. Odum will definitely be missed.
