Re: An experienced observation about this team
Don't know if the competition was as difficult? But, all things being equal this was the most dominate lay I've witnessed in this series.

Gym, Don't have individual game stats on Bob Pelkington but he averaged 16.1 rebounds for his career and 21.1 for his senior yr to lead the nation. His career scoring average was about 13 ppg, so he probably had a few that were close.
Luther had a 24 and 19 game as well as a 25 reb game but don't know the pts to go with it.
But agree, Nunge's game was one for the ages and I hope he can be productive and HEALTHY into the BE schedule.

Rick I didn’t count West cause he was primarily a forward I’m not sure Bird Pelkington ever scored 31, but 15 rebounds per game were pretty common for him

Forget about numbers, Nunge simply dominated the game. Of Course the Dayton game that West had is awful hard to beat.gym from delhi wrote: ↑Mon Dec 13, 2021 12:33 pmWas Nunge’s game the best ever by an X center? I don’t think Rackley, Fullerton, Piontek, or Stainbrook ever had numbers like Satuday’s

More recent posts have detracted from the original point of the post. Of course, one can recognize individual players from the past (West, etc.) and compare to Nunge. My emphasize was not on individual players but on the overall quality of different XU teams over the past 63 years.

I stand corrected IF West played more center than forward

Of course we have not forgotten David West or, for that matter, such other great individual players such as Bob Pelkington, Steve Thomas, Bob Quick, Tyrone Hill, etc., etc., all of which I saw play. My point is not about individual players for Xavier, but the overall quality of any year's team over the past 63 years. The current team has more quality depth (nine starters), height, and athleticism, able to play a smothering defense, be capable of major league speed, many great shooters, etc to make them, in my opinion, based on many years of observing Xavier teams, the best all-around Xavier team I have ever witnessed. Of course, the season is only one-third complete, and the team will have many tests in front of it. Time will tell how this team completes the season.

Re best regular seasons, don't leave out 2002-2003. 3 seed and had David West. He's our best player ever and it's not close. His 15-year NBA career confirms what we got to see in college.
I'm cautious as well. I am relieved to see Steele mix up defenses. But Hunter has got to become the 8th or 9th man. Start Freemantle and Nunge, and bring Miles in as a defensive stopper. Use Odom and Kunkel first off the bench. The Big East road and Villanova - how do we compete? The next week will be everything!
