I chose Steele. However, the timing of Mack's leaving is good. The final four is this weekend, which gives GC a chance to talk to coaches and administrators about the opening. Additonally, no one seems to talk about Div 2 coaches. Does anyone know of an up and coming coach. Last a talk show host stated that X's last 6 coaches had a grand total of 41 wins before taking over at X. As small as the number is - it seems high to me?

Not sure how you could hire him over Steele, though- you basically couldn't. Has the name, bit of NBA experience and success @ lower level.

One season for Thad @ Butler (24 wins)
One season for Skip @ Loyola (17 wins)

Who ever is next will only be at X for 3 to 9 years max...it is current history of coaches. I want the next coach to guarantee a FF...or pay his or her salary back. (lol) X's offer to the next coach should be 1 million and an unlimited supply of bags of ice.

Doesn't matter if we hire an experienced HC, a long time assistant or an NBA assistant with XU ties like James Posey. If a big time job comes up, based on XU's history of final fours and chances to make one, that new coach will be gone. They all want to make the final four and have a shot at a NC. They all want to make more money. The Mark Few's of the world are few (no pun intended) and far between. And even he almost left a few years back if I recall, then decided not to. If X ever does get to a final four, it may or may not change perception of the program. Butler's coach left for OSU. It's history had two final fours back to back, but the perception is there is a better chance to get to the NC at a bigger school and the money's better. It is what it is. If we have the same or a little better success for a few years with the next coach that's great. Maybe some day our situation will change and maybe the job will be an end point for some coach, but until then, we'll have to continue to try and move forward with each change.

Just to throw something out there but what would the board feel about an offer to a coach like Mark Few, I am sure it will not happen but if your never try you never know. Heck you never know.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

I heard Matta wants to come back to X but NO CHANCE. He left Butler after one year and X after three. Do you really think he would be all in if he came back to X. He didn't leave OSU, he was fired and btw, Holtman did much better with many of the same players. I liked Thad when he was here but this would fall under the "fool me once" category. Miller likely a similar thought process as he is likely interested because of his precarious situation at zone. I do like him more than Matta primarily because he was also a huge supporter of X after he left ( I know intert Lexus comment here). Having said that, while I really like Miller as a coach, the thought of having him taken off in handcuffs at the 8 minute mark during a game scares me. So its between Steele and Kelsey i believe. Kelsey has done a decent job at Winthrop and i realize why he decided against UMass but the fact that Steele has been here, knows the players and recruits, and is considered to be a good coach by many, makes him my choice. I have one fear with Steele with regards to certain ties to Mack and will leave at that.

Doc mentioned Steve Alford this morning in the Cincinnati Enquirer as having interest...

XAVIER’S COACHING SEARCH now includes Steve Alford. Alford’s representative(s) has made Xavier aware of the UCLA coach’s interest in the gig.

About midway in the article... Interesting... Dan

This would be great news for UCLA. His record at UCLA and previous stops have not been great.

Could someone who is supportive of Steele allay my concern that his hiring would only maintain the vicious cycle of promising assistants who experience an amount of success at X sufficient to permit them to leave? I do not post much, but read often and value the opinions of many posters. I am not posting to challenge or argue - life's too short, especially with like minded fans. The problem with Steele, it seems to me, is that incremental improvements achieved by promoted assistants have been just enticing enough to render a relationship that is flawed from the start, appear worthy of repetition. Some toxic long-term relationships become so in part because they yield an enticing amount of good along with bad. I do not dislike Coach Steele. I do however, believe we know the following: (1) This would be Steele's first HC job; (2) Successful, driven folks are loathe to believe that their first job is their last or ideal job; (3) Steele studied at the feet of CM who just left his hometown and Alma mater for a perceived bigger and better deal; and (4) with all of the obvious x's and o's issues we saw from NYC onward, why are some so confident that the Assistant HC also presiding over those events with CM knows what he is doing?
1) You are correct, this will be Steele's first HC job
2) You are correct. To avoid this, hire someone who is not successful, and not driven
3) You are correct. To avoid this, stipulate that the new hire must (per a contract clause) never leave XU, unless they die. For some reason, I think this will limit your pool of candidates
4) This last point. You might have stumbled upon something. Then again, I don't think they instructed Tre to stumble in the lane and vomit the ball into the air in the last minute vs FSU. He did that on his own. I guess if you find a coach that no one has ever questioned any move they have made, you would have a phenomenal coach that XU could not afford.

Don't use Butler as an example. Yes they have 2 Final Fours, but they operate like a high school. Very low budget operation. Recruiting by car, even with improvements, an arena that's just so-so. X has everything any major has, except the FF. Loyola just proved a FF is a massive crap shoot. Holtmans move from Butler to OSU was like going from a Chevy to a Ferrari.
