Question about Trevon

I think that Trevon is a wonderful young man and, having watched a few games with his father, I know he's great too.

But I have to ask: What happened to the quality of his play in the latter part of the season, especially the last 20+ games, in which his performance hasn't been remotely like that of a Wooden Award finalist, a distinction he earned in the first three and a half years of his career?

The question is like the elephant in the room. I've often thought that he's injured.

Tre was GREAT for X but the reality is that he is a spot up shooter, He can't really create his own shot and struggles handling the ball. Coming to X with the surrounding cast was a blessing for X and the players around him. I hope he makes the NBA but his game is a dime a dozen. Teams really seemed to catch up with how he plays which was why he seemed to have more games where he didn't score as much. Hamilton did a great job crowding him and making him dribble knowing that he isn't going to beat you off the dribble. Foul trouble, missed FTs, Marshall injury, all summed to an X loss. X has been a 1,2,and 3 seed in NCAA and bounced in first weekend.

Tre is my favorite Muskie of all time for many reasons. To me he is kind of the first true big east type recruit we had (along with sumner). We took him from ucla and as a 6'6 wing that could shoot and score he's the type of guy the A-10 muskies could never really get (unless they stole it as a diamond in the rough a la romain sato. He stayed all four years, won our first big east championship, and is the second leading scorer of all time behind byron, and is by all accounts a great kid too.

I do agree with the poster above though who notes his true game is as a spot up shooter. It does seem like he actually regressed somewhat this year in terms of getting to the basket. I don't know why. I remember during the elite 8 run last year commentators mentioning his old man game and how he could sneak his way to the basket. He didn't do that much at the end of this year and seemed much less sure of his handle (including last night).

I know he battled a shoulder injury throughout the year. He still has tons of big games and huge shots (remember he 4 point play?) down the stretch so I disagree with the premise that he fell off for he last 20 games completely.

I think one issue with this team was they were almost too nice. Other than JP who's got some fire they all seem to be pretty reserved guys who aren't really looking to step on the throats of other teams. Tre embodied that too which in a way makes him a great leader bc he's steady but also hurts in some highly emotional games like last night.

I saw his first and last games at Cintas and loved watching him. I can't wait to watch his jersey get raised into the rafters.

I'm not sure what happened last night but it really is too bad. Ill miss watching him play and miss team 96.

Tre drew the best defender every game and still averaged what 18+ a game? He has one of the quickest releases I've seen and given a brief opening, can shoot with the best of them most nights. He is not going to create off the dribble other than his step back which was usually great. When he's being hounded, why not draw up plays to set a pick or multiple picks to get him a look. Can't believe our best scorer only got 8 shots. X needs a new more motion filled offense which can free up shooters, especially those who cannot create off the dribble well (see Brad Redford).

Love Tre and appreciate his 4 years. Though 1 of my favorite Xu players, JP Macura had so much fire he gets ranked ahead of Tre. Sato also gets ranked ahead as well as David West, Tyron Hill & #1 Larkin. I don't want any of this to diminish Tre. These rankings ultimately don't help any of these guys. Tre was always a gentleman & appreciated the fans & teammates. It seemed some of his worst games this year were against our best opponents. Maybe those opponents plan of Defense had something to do with this. He was not great with the ball & creating his own shot. I also understand the 3 shot created for Kanter at the end of FSU game, but wouldn't that have been the most clutch time for Tre - when he takes a bad game and becomes savior? Would have to look at replays on end of game - maybe they didn't let him get open , but it sure seemed like a design for Kanter.

They crowded Tre all game wanting him to dribble. No way he gets a clean look. This was a great call to get a very clean look for a good shooter (see ETSU game). The reality is the defense that FSU played really gave X an opportunity to drive all game. They extended out on Tre not even allowing him to shoot. Scruggs did a little bit but didn't finish too well. Goodin didn't finish at all. While X played poorly, biggest play was late in game when X was up 4 and Goodin had ball stolen and dribbled out of bounds in the back court. If that doesn't happen, X at worse runs off another 30 seconds off the clock with a 4 point lead. Based on Goodin, Scruggs, Marshall, and Gates coming back-X should be a much better defensive team next year. However, these same four have to really step up their offensive games because not sure where points come in. People will realize quickly how much Tre will be missed next year when teams don't have to account for a sharp shooter. Hope coaches can figure out best offense.

One of the great players in Xavier history. He had a few off games recently. We needed big efforts from him in order to go far in the tournament. Didn't happen last night. Mack did mention in the press conference that due to foul trouble and Naji being hurt they had to put him more at the three position instead of the four.Quicker guys were guarding him.

It wouldn't have mattered where X played him. Fla St was going to put a big guard on him period, knowing he is, as X-Exp said, a spot up shooter, who can't create off the dribble.

That being said, he was a tremendous net positive throughout his career and will be sorely missed like JP, and the other seniors. He represented X very well on and off the court, minus one hiccup.
