Would You?

Postby commish118 » Fri Dec 23, 2016 12:07 am

I watched Ohio State struggle to beat UNC Asheville tonight, and I thought: I really don't miss Matta. I don't miss Sean Miller either. Personally, I would rather have Chris Mack than either of them. I can only think of three coaches I would take over Chris: Wright, Self, and Krzyzewski. But only if they would stay, and I don't think they would. I'm not saying Chris Mack is the best coach in the country. I am saying I don't think there is a better coach for Xavier, or a coach I would rather have. But that's just me.

So two questions:
  • Would you take Matta or Miller over Mack?
  • Who would you take over Chris Mack?

The thing that CM has, that the others did not show, was the desire to make XAVIER great over making THEMSELVES great. I believe that all the other coaches wanted Xavier to DO great, but mainly because of the opportunities that it would give THEM, and not because of what it would do for XAVIER U.

I really liked both Matta and Miller as coaches, and thought both of them did a lot for Xavier. But it's impossible for me, when comparing them to CM, to forget that they both left X for larger state schools, and that neither of them showed a love for XU and Cincinnati, that CM seems to have. The appearance is that to the others being head coach at X was just a job. Even though it may have been a job they enjoyed and were successful at, it was still just a job. But it seems that for CM it's more of a calling and less of a job. CM FITS at Xavier more so than any of the other two. The only other coach's I could see fitting this way were Gillen and Prosser. Both of them not only fit in at X, they also fit in when talking about Cincinnati. In fact, Gillen said last night that his favorite place he ever lived was Cincinnati and that he maintains a lot of contacts with people here.

So, no, I wouldn't take either Matta or Miller over Mack.

As far as any others? impossible to say because, while the others have had great careers, who knows how they would have done at X, with all of the obsticals to success it has had/has, v schools without those obsticals? Possibly Mark Few, but only because his situation hasn't been that much different in some ways, and because the success he has had with the program and as a member of his community. I think he would have been successful at X too.

Dear Santa-Mack,

All I want for Christmas is to see Myles Davis in uniform on Dec. 28…

So far I have no problem with the way he has handled the situation. The kid has been suspended indefinitely. I don't think the death penalty is necessary.

Am I to take this is that you approve of his allegories regarding the nature of the offense?

I think the handling of the situation last year gets pulled into this.........2 incidents last year that are very similar to this one. Nothing done as far as benching or suspension. Now after the 3rd incident, he finally does something.......

I have an issue with it b/c I think dealing with this earlier and getting the kid some help could have addressed this much sooner. Now, he's hurt his draft status and lots of other things....senior year, team distractions. Etc, etc.

Coach K says he "loves" this kid. Really, do you love him or do you want to win basketball games no matter the collateral damage?

Coach K was defiant and arrogant is his response after the game, basically saying that he will handle GA the way he wants to. Even the AD cowered and made a terse statement insinuating he was punished sufficiently, by receiving a T. Unlike the AD at IU, who finally helped ouster the biggest and most arrogant bully in cbb, Duke's AD showed cowardice.

I believed he would get suspended by Duke's administration regardless of Coack K's comments, especially when the national commentators and former Duke alums like J Williams and J Bilas called for a suspension. I also suspect the Commissioner of the ACC let Duke know if they didn't act, the League would. I do think we, including myself, should remember how much critcism CM took for his handling of the Brawl and aftermath. Both of these examples show why having a strong administration is far more important than any coach (except for maybe J Thompson III).
