X - UMASS Announcers
Is it just me, or did these announcers seem to do a great job? Their knowledge of both teams and their articulation was excellent. Granted the refs were terrible and were bringing me down, but the announcers' reactions and emotions were really fun to listen to. Nowhere near the my main man Gus Johnson yet, but still...I think they did a great job. Haven't had too many of those lately.

agree, they did some great calls, especially liked the depth of commentary on Xavier's guard play and the "culture" of the backcourt; that was different...we could stand some culture @MM blogs

ya...they too seemed to wonder (like we do at MM) what we're gonna do without our experienced backcourt next season.
Main thing that gets annoying is, everytime a different announcer does a Xavier game, they always mention Sean's past at Pitt and his ballhandling skills (just a pet peeve) when talking about Lavender.

think that's because he's a mini legend, part of rafferty's "send it in jerome" replay, replay, replay....johnny carson show, and making the circuit with dad coach at college camps, rubbing elbows with the bball elite of the day, aaannnnd, noted point guard at pitt, his coaching philosophy accents top guard play-the start of any good team..referencing X guards the conversation reverts back to miller timeX JP U wrote:ya...they too seemed to wonder (like we do at MM) what we're gonna do without our experienced backcourt next season.

It is not that I did not like the announcers, but one of them did seem to be pretty obsessed with the shot clock. Several times my friends and I heard him saying things like oh now the shot clock is down to 15 they have to look for a shot! To me that is a bit early to be worried about the time left on the clock.

I thought just the opposite. I do not think they did a good job keeping the viewer apprised of the game situation. Now maybe I should pay closer attenton, but also it is their job. I am thinking for instance it would be nice to be reminded of the number of team fouls. I somehow missed Love's third and fourth foul. I remember more than once, that there would be a foul or something and they would not explain the call, then maybe go to a tv timeout, and come back, and you wonder what happened, or who the call was on. I figure that is how I missed the fouls on Love. I think a little more calling of the game, and as mentioned above, a little less talking of Sean's history at Pitt, or telling us that there is only 25 seconds left on the shot clock. The next time I am turning on Byron and Joe.

Each new set of announcers calling a Xavier game likes to add the color commentary. It's the "penalty" regular team followers have to endure as a new crew puts a face on Xavier basketball. We should have such problems!xujoe wrote:I thought just the opposite. I do not think they did a good job keeping the viewer apprised of the game situation. Tend to agree about the lack of updates on stats, but that is NOT the announcers fault, usually a lack of talented stat crew attached to the broadcast, and/or no stat monitor.
We've been spoiled by listening to Joe and Byron, or more accurately, the broadcast team that includes Mark Wagner. We are perhaps the best informed listeners around when it comes to getting team and personal stats. The instant stat screens now supplied at most college arenas have all the stats in real time, and Byron and Joe take advantage. Byron gets a little winey when a facility doesn't have instant stats. Auburn and the games at the Sears center in Chicago come to mind.

Re: X - UMASS Announcers
Re-the constant mentioning of the shot clock. I believe one of them was busted or malfunctioning throughout most of the second half.. Just a thought.
And I'm old enough to remember when all commentators referred to Xavier as Eggsavier, mentioned us nationally only when Xavier lost the big rivalry game to UC, or never mentioned Xavier at all. Maybe that's because Xavier seldom had any TV games back in the 50s, 60s and 70s BS ( before Staak. )
I for one thought they were pretty good Sunday. At least they attempted to be non-partisan and were pretty successful at it. I don't mind the mentioning of Sean's background as a player and coach because it shows the announcers have done some homework. I for one am sick and tired of having to listen to the latest cutesy story about the home team when Xavier is on the road. That also goes for constant mention of UD's injuries and Brian Roberts maladies.
I'm also sick of reading about them. Be prepared at the Duquesne game to hear about the kids who were shot last year, and the one kid who's no longer at the school or playing ball. I liken it to the Olympic telecasts where the American athlete is competing in the memory of his sick uncle, dying aunt, cousin who has beriberi(sp) or any other affliction, and that happens because the athletes themselves (exclude Picaboo Striet (sp) )are for the most part colorless and not very interesting, or getting their brains beat out.

Right on '59 ...
This board sure can get entertaining at times. Here we are 17-4 (Remember the nellies saaying we're a bubble team when we were ar 8-2)... probably gonna be inside the TOP 20 this week ... so not much to bitchabout ...but we'll jump on game announcers telling us too much about Sean and how much time is left on the shot (their graphics machine was on the blink so they were informing the audience .. and that's bad) .. we have a poster who says Sean is doing OK .. for now ... but they jury is still out ...and a poster(s) who are in a tizzy over a bland meaningless comment by Stan (he ought to read what Drew said after the game (ESPN Basketball page)....
Isn't life on the MM board a hoot?
BTW '59, morning rag here had a couple of great stories on the passing of Mike Holovak .. there probably isn't anyone else on the board besides you and me and Mr. O who can recall the "war" between Mick and Mike. It was a pleasure for me to have known both so well ..
