The Omaha newspaper probably has a beat writer that has developed more relationships, and puts a little more in to covering Creighton than we have. If we still had Dustin Dow as our beat writer, there probably would be a lot more written on Xavier and the Big East.

Dustin would be more fashionable too.

You have nailed it.

Not long ago, the Enquirer had a young guy on their staff who already possessed more contacts internally at X and externally in college basketball. The paper could have done some shifting to improve its overall X and sports coverage. It did not.

Re relative lack of X coverage by Enquirer, the simple fact is that there are at least 10 UC alums for every X alum. UC has around 10 times the number of students. UC has football. What would you do if you were editor-in-chief of the Enquirer? I'd love to see more coverage of X, but it ain't going to happen.

It is not merely the lack of quantity of coverage, but the lack of quality of coverage. Good coverage = readers.

The same is true with Butler, which is outnumbered by both IU and Purdue grads by more than 10-1. But two final fours has pushed them onto the front pages during basketball season with those two schools. So it is a matter of the right coverage.

There seems to be some talk here of what is in the newspapers (ie X, or UC, or Butler, etc). I read a lot on the internet, but seldom buy a newspaper and have not had home delivery of a paper for decades. I buy a USA Today when traveling, sometimes. But from everything i see and hear, most local newspapers are struggling to survive. If I need to read newspapers, I go to the library and read several different papers from several cities, plus the Wall Street journal, plus USA Today for free @ the library. Newspapers are cutting costs by reducing staff and most newspapers are more ads than story content. I think there is not going to be a beat writer just for one school. The newspapers cannot afford it.
