N.I.L. Money

I am in the dark when it comes to Xavier Basketball N.I. L. money. I have heard that Xavier has 3 million in N.I.L. I assume that means yearly? So do we have like a GENERAL MANAGER who decides who gets what and how much they get paid? It seems to me with over 300 D1 basketball teams that would be like a full time job. Miller and the coaches have a lot of work to do already .Does anyone know what U Conn spends on their men's basketball team? I read Paige Buecker ( U Conn basketball ) makes 650,000 a year.

Did we spend 3 million on last years team? Do players have agents? How do they know what their N.I.L. value is without a agent or some outside help? I wonder if we need to hire a scout as a full time N.I.L. guy . I believe U Conn has one. I think without a full time N.I.L person we are probably way behind in the Portal race. I couldn't find what the U Conn basketball players made in N.I.L. money this year but I saw Adam Sanogo a Forward for U CONN made 773,000 last year. Preparation is probably vital in signing these portal players. If this is the way we seem to be headed Signing more portal players than high school guys we need to get serious about the portal. College coaches are working 10-12 hour days already and don't have the time to know a lot about players on other teams. I prefer the old school way of getting high school players and developing them over 4-5 years . However that takes patience. Very hard for any freshman to make a impact competing against players 4-5 years older

I'd be shocked if they don't have someone in position to monitor NIL developments... And I'd guess everyone in the coaching profession knows exactly what the players on other rosters are making in NIL money... Dan

I would contend we are in the bubble of the NIL market.

Can’t imagine the prices we are hearing right now are sustainable, but they also aren’t enforceable since there are no contracts.

Have also heard a few funny stories where decent high-major starters are now asking double or triple in NIL $$$ vs. what top-10 guys in the portal were getting 2 yrs ago. Some thought NIL collective might dwindle a tad. Instead, there are more people in NIL space than ever.


My view of NILs is:
There is a system of NIL money with little or no thought, but what is the NCAA's gut reaction to the successful lawsuits against it by students and athletes? If prices continue on this trajectory, schools may find that they cannot sustain losing money to maintain a sports program of football, basketball, or any other sport.

Does anyone want to offer a solution? I am sure college presidents would love to hear a solution to this stampede of money flowing out instead of into the colleges that are pricing themselves out of business when declining enrollment begins.

The till is reportedly in the $3.5M range. Unconfirmed, and I suspect it changes from year to year. Hopefully, X can pocket some for next year.

Best of luck to Des, and the rest who transferred for that matter. This also applies to the potential future portal entrants. Their priority should be themselves, and as long as they honor their annual commitment to X, which they all did, I believe we should feel nothing but gratitude towards them.

Seems the term NIL needs to go. The current structure seems to have nothing to do with Name, Image and Likeness. I don't see players doing commercials, promoting products, etc. in exchange for this money. I don't follow any players on social media so maybe I'm wrong?

Schools should be kept out of NIL. It should be all about corporate entities paying for promotion of products directly through players. Schools should simply provide a contact list to players after they sign. They can speak to the companies offering NIL contracts during recruiting but not discuss $ or guarantees. Athletes could also search out their own endorsements beyond what the school provides.

Not sure the above is possible at this point but in my opinion should have been how the change was rolled out.

My greatest concern for college sports in general is that many more players will take money under the table to determine outcomes on games for betting purposes and profits. Gambling on sports ie football and basketball at the college level just took a big hit upwards. Those that do not get enough NIL monies will or may decide outcomes of games for gambling reasons.

I'd be more concerned about family members/ friends making the bets with info provided by the athlete... If they don't get greedy like the fool with the Alabama baseball info you could "win" a tidy sum... Dan

This is a bit out there. I don’t see the gambling threat increasing because of NIL.
