What is the Offensive Gameplan?

Postby Go Go Golston » Mon Jan 16, 2017 4:52 pm

Honest to God I watch or attend every game and don't know what they are trying to accomplish offensively. Everything's ball screens. No screens off the ball, no hi-low, no cutters. Just pass around the perimeter until somebody turns the corner. Even when they win it's always ugly. The last three coaches have EXPOSED the Muskies. Please somebody board it out for me. I know there are basketball guys on this board. Please tell me what Mack's trying to get them to do.
I've said it before, the players being recruited have low basketball IQ and it doesn't improve once they arrive on campus. The coaching staff is in love with athleticism. Just get used to it. I really miss what a great PASSER Matt Stainbrook was. He was low athleticism; great basketball player.
This squad's identity has been forged.

Sumner dribbles for 20 seconds, flashes some moves, then dishes to Bluiett or Gates for a ill fated three and pray to God Gaston or Macura make it happen on the boards. If all goes well, make 1 of 2 from line.

Think that does it.

That sounds about right. I can't believe we have tuned into a perimeter team that can't shoot 3's or FT's. Still trying to figure out how Goodin scored so many in high school.

Mack needs to trust other players besides Sumner and blueitt to make shots at end of games. Lost the game against Wisconsin last year because Summner threw up a forced shot at the end of the game instead of finding someone open to make a better shot. Summner is just not the answer at point guard.

OK - basketball is moved or has moved to position-less play. The offense is more about concepts than any set play. In theory, guys are too athletic to be "boxed in" with a script of plays. So what happens is as the viewer you see when this style of coaching is not successful. When Macura was shooting deep in Orlando and making everything it looked good. When we are met with aggressive on ball pressure where screens are hedged and there are small lanes to get to the rim, that's what we have today. As players you need to be able to do a few things in conceptualized offenses: 1. Make the extra pass, get yourself to the FT line, and have the ability to create opportunities for others. It allows for free flowing play and less thought. But you have to have a decent IQ to play like this. Also, we don't have a true post presence as a primary scorer. Our bigs are #3 options in the offense or they get stick backs. The other problem is that Edmond is a scoring PG. You need a primary 1for this type of offense. Butler is a good example. Their PG is create/pass oriented. Conversely, Smith from NC State is a scoring PG, but he is elite, can get to the rim, and is NBA lottery status. All the big time high school/aau programs run this "no offense" offense because it translates to the NBA style of play.

The reality is that Myles was the go to guy who hit big shots in several games earlier in the season last year. Then Chris became so enamored with Ed and he was the guy the rest of the way. And he is again this year, even though his shooting % is not that great, even when getting to the rim. I agree trust others and we may even fool the other team sometimes.
