OT - XU student body turning into soft tossers

Postby Jesseandrippers » Sat May 18, 2013 2:44 am

I recently just heard about all the drama surrounding the '13 XU Commencement Award recipient. Instead of truly honoring a great person like Anthony Munoz, these knit-hatted open mikers trashed him and protested on the mall while playing hackey sack and strumming their acoustic guitars. What are we Oberlin?

Also, who is this Seelbach cat? If you post here...put your sketch book down and take your medicine. You are ruining a student body that was already teetering on being limp-wristed and over-sensitive. I dont disagree with your stance but you created a swell to deface a good man.

Now, now, Jesse, while X is a Catholic school and Cincy's more conservative than not, as it's 2013, it's likely that a lot, if not a majority, of the student body (especially the on-campus students) supports gay rights and gay marriage, so they were just making their voices heard, as college students have been doing for 50 years.

At least the Admin did not cave to the intolerant protesters and allowed Munoz to speak. By all accounts Munoz is a good citizen with many good qualities for young people to admire. He should be allowed his opinions, including those on traditional marriage. The Jesuits have traditionally been open to a broad spectrum of ideas. They should continue to be.

Fellas, keep in mind that there have been instances of more liberal speakers being invited to Xavier, and our more right-leaning posters objected to them, so the students are just doing the same thing in revers.

Im all for diverse speakers to allow folks to give their political opinion. Im also for gay rights, one of my siblings is gay. This was not a politically driven engagement. He was being honored for his service to the community. People should be ashamed of themselves for trying to tear his life apart and discredit all the good he has done for people.

Oh, please, feel free to overreact. Munoz's life wasn't "torn apart" because of this. That's just a silly statement, nor were his good works discredited.

Maybe you should go back and read why they were protesting. They were protesting to get clarification of his views on changing homosexual behavior. They received it and dropped their objections.

I'm not sure which is worse, them protesting something so miniscule (he wasn't speaking about gay rights) or you making it a big deal that they protested. Making a big deal of it only gives them more credence. If you think they're that ridiculous then just ignore them and move on.

Jesse, you are the only one overreacting to the situation, with your hyperbolic statements. Not only was this situation resolved amicably, but it seems that the target of the protest was less offended than you. The students and the councilman were absolutely justified in demanding a clarification on his position.

If Munoz supports traditional marriage, then that is a moral judgement that is in tune with the Catholic church. He has every right to express that opinion and anyone who opposes him speaking at commencement just for that rather than listening to what he has to say first is the real bigot.

If Munoz thinks he can force his morality on everyone and prevent the decidedly rapid acceptance of gay marriage socially and legally, then he is in denial and/or has little understanding of human history and the Constitution. In that case it is debatable whether or not he should speak at a commencement.

But if he thought that homosexuality could be "cured" then he would be an ignorant bigot and there would be no place for him at Xavier University. Due to his open association with a group that holds this belief, it is absolutely fair to ask if feels the same way. We scrutinize public figures for looser connections to far less controversial groups... and I wouldn't be surprised if you or anyone else criticising these students has been guilty of the same in the recent past...
