Re: Crowd
I think the student section, or atleast it seems from watching on the the tube, is better than past years. I'm greedy though. This program/ team from top to bottom is moving up in a major way, and the support aka the student section needs to progress with the upward swing of the team/program as well. I watch quite a bit of college basketball, and many times you hear the student sections involved the ENTIRE game. Whether its chanting something, jumping up and down, performing some choreographed crowd "movements", or coherently cheering, not just when something exciting happens, but throughout the game. I don't expect them to be the Cameron Crazies, but their participation needs to be more "prolonged" and organized. Why? First it creates an exciting atmosphere and distinct homecourt advantage that is absolutely an advantage to the teams performance. And secondly, and as important, recruits want to play in front of a frenzied/adoring crowd. The cliche "recruiting is the lifeblood of a program" is no cliche...it is the ultimate truth...and coaches know it. Why do you think UD can bring in any decent recruits? Its obviously not their dumpy arena or middle of the pack/no NCAA tourney appearences. Their student and fan support is the best in the league and that is a major deciding factor concerning recruits.(I just threw up in my mouth a litte bit after writing that) The "Extreme Fans" need to mobilize/organize...start some traditions that may carryover to the next generation. The cheering /support needs to extend throughout the ENTIRE game......

Re: Crowd
I have been off campus for almost 4 years now but has anyone ever written an editorial in the Newswire about this? Seems like that would be a good place to get the discussion started in the student population.

Re: Crowd
an editorial was written last year, and as you can tell, outside of the normal crazy students, not many changes took place.

Re: Crowd
I have never had a major issue with the student section, specially Sunday I thought they were just fine, don't remember seeing them sitting once. But I do think they need to lead the rest of the fans better. There were a couple times me and my aunt commented on how quiet it was or how we had started cheering and finished way to fast. Being a xavier fan for awhile now and attending most games(I'm only 20 so not too much exp.) I've always thought we are the loudest crowd around.... in spurts. Only thing I'd like from the fans is keeping it going for more of the game, and thats where I think the students could really help out.

Re: Crowd
This is just my take on things, as a student...
I think because of the success of the program this year we're getting a lot more bandwagon fans in the student section. You know, the fans that just go because all their friends are going, even though they don't really care. Diehard fans, like myself, get pushed back in line (due to the fact that its not regulated and anyone can just jump right in) and therefore get seats in the worst part of the student section... 116. i hate it over there, no one cheers (except for the few diehard fans, i've seen drew's crew over there a few times)... and of course if no one cheers around you, you feel incredibly awkward yelling at the top of your lungs, interrupting the gossip in the row in front of you. The reason the tennessee game was so loud was because all those diehard fans stayed around and got pumped up for the huge game... no bandwagon fans cuz they simply didnt care to stick around. again, thats just my take on things.
too many gossip girls and not enough diehard fans... thats all...
