It may not be the greatest comeback in Xavier history, but I remember playing Princeton in I believe 1999 in the NIT for a ticket to NYC in the dirty, smelly, roach motel known as The Cincinnati Gardens. Bill Carmody was the Princeton coach, and they ran that pain in the neck offense with essentially a non-D-1 roster. Although their center, Chris Young, did go on to a long MLB career as a pitcher with various teams, they had nothing approaching Xavier’s athletes. In the first half Xavier was completely befuddled by the back door cuts and ball screens. Princeton had us by about 14, mostly on uncontested lay ups. The first half was so bad that I forgot that I was a gentleman and stood on my chair as the boys went to locker room and yelled, “You are losing to a f-ing high school team.”

I do not know what St. Skip said to them at half time, but over the course of the second half the lead evaporated (Lenny Brown was unstoppable, he could have hit a three from the muddy parking lot across the street), and Xavier won to go on to New York. What a game!
I remember that game quite well, one of my favorite X moments. I was out on the floor with many others at the end of the game singing “New York, New York” as it was the regional finals of the NIT.

I think St Skip said guys even the lawyer in the cheap seats is berating you so step it up. ;) :D Good to hear from you PTP how is the hockey?
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

Ed:

My late father used to video tape games for me, and I have that one. I never have watched the first half. It was Lenny Brown “bombs away” in the second half.

Ed:
I took a 14 month break from hockey due to the epidemic, returned to the ice for about four months but Anne has gotten so that I no longer can leave her, so I am taking (at age 66) another break—perhaps forever. We will have to see. Thanks for asking. I know she is in your prayers.
