What is so sacred about the end of the game. If there was an unwritten rule about not making a call at the end of the game then what about the beginning of the game? Players make fouls and the refs job is to call them. My problems is not that they call fouls, it is that some refs ignore blatant fouls to call the ticky-tack fouls. The hand play by guards happen all game long and then all of a sudden they call a foul...happened in a game on Sunday and the announcers mentioned how all of a sudden it was a foul but was not called all game. Players have to adjust to refs calls but when the ref is inconsistent that is unfair to the players.
I never met a fan that paid his money to watch the refs!

Re: Bad Officiating
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

Does anybody have a copy of the rule book that says exactly what the rule says and how it is to be interpreted. If the guy was standing behind the basket and shot it over the backboard I'm pretty sure the officials would have called it and I think the intent of the rule is to prevent that. The shot was made from the side and went over the corner of the backboard and about half of the ball went over the backboard. If we don't have a rulebook we are only guessing what the call should be.xcellent wrote:There has been some awful officiating this year in just about every conference. That last call should have been made, and it was obvious. They can look at the replay, and every shot of it showed it was over the backboard. As for not deciding the game on that, are you kidding me? So you are saying that a play that was made in opposition of the rules, that WINS the game for you shouldn't be called a foul because it affects the outcome? So if you are going in for a basket with 2 seconds left and I punch you in the face, they shouldn't call the foul because it affect the outcome? I very much disagree that the refs shouldn't affect the outcome of a game. That is what they do the ENTIRE game. Every call they make affects the outcome of the game, because it affects the game. Now I don't think you should call ticky-tack foul at the end, but if its a foul it should be called. The ball over the backboard was in violation of the rules and therefore not a basket. Doesn't this mean that the refs affected the outcome because they didn't make the call?

Exactly. The fact of the matter is that it is the ref's JOB to affect the outcome of the game. That is why it is college basketball and not Intermurals. I just want the refs to be consistent all game, call the same fouls both ways all game.
Someone early stated the exact rule. The rule is that if the ball goes over the backboard it is out of bounds.

I have to agree that inconsistency is a real problem at times. Players adjust to the way the game is being called and then they are all messed up when the refs shift the way they are calling things.
And I too have never understood the unwritten "no call" rule at the end of the game. I always thought it was blatantly unfair and can affect the outcome of the game as much as making a call that normally would be made in the course of a game.

Does that mean the whole ball or any part of the ball? I don't think the poster was quoting the exact rule.xcellent wrote:Exactly. To be honest, i'm not sure what the actual call is. From what I got from the talking heads it is any part of the ball, kind of like in football if any part of the ball crosses the goal line, it is a touchdown. It is clear that part of the ball crosses over the backboard and they have the ability to review it.
