OK...It's Juwan Staten, a 2010 PG out of the slime pit known as Dayton. Staten was all OSU until Matta signed Trae Golden, a top 10 Rivals player and PG overall. Miller was recruiting Staten and had offered. He is a top 100 type talent. I'm a little sick about losing this kid, but if you look at the how and why, it's a bit easier to swallow.

1. Most top 100 kids expect to play immediately. At X there was a good chance he would have played behind Lyons and Redford for his first 2 -3 years/and or share pt. UDump shytehole offers him a starting position and 35+ minutes of p.t. as a freshman.

2.He's from Dayton...compare it to Duncan and his recruitment. UK really wanted him and he decided to stay local. He wanted to stay home...period.

Two huge factors led to this verbal; IMMEDIATE PLAYING TIME time along with FRIENDLY GEOGRAPHY was why this kid chose the "the toilet". However, I do have to give credit where credit is do.......how can Gregory (who is not well liked by his players on a personal level once they've played for him for a year or two/actually establish a real relationship with him ie the various transfers/defections/meltdowns), has yet to consistentley develop players to their full potential(zero NBA draftees), not even a sniff of post season play, be a middle of the group team in an above average conference, and play ina sewage ravaged arena that was built 30 plus years ago (1969). Gregory basically is selling shyte on a stick, and every once in awhile, is striking gold. He must make an incredible first impression with these kids, and keep up the FACADE until they sign their death warrant..ie also known as the Letter of Intent to accept a BBall scholarship to UDUMP.

Lets all be honest here, UD and X fans alike...why would a potential top 100 player choose UD( struggling to make the A-10 TOURNEY, tied for 10-11th in the conferecne, no national presence, no TV deal, no momentum of any kind, no tourney presence, playing in an arena built over 35 years ago (1969) and commonly flooded with sewage(yes, thats shyte and piss from inbred Daytonites, sounds tasty huh?), and where the leadership at top is weak at best (compare Ted Kissell vs Bobo....who just happened to recieve an invitaiton to the tournament com., a true honor in his profession)

I wish Juwan good luck(I keep hearing from UD fans that C Wright was a huge factor in his decesion) They will be at the same school for at most 2 years. Staten is a 2010 recruit and Gregory may not be around by then. I was really hoping we snagged this kid, along with Adrien Payne. And I was actually starting to feel some compassion for their pain.....This verbal will once again create obnoxious cries of surpassing X and "next year" dreams of championships...that will never come to them. God I loathe their fans.

if you don't mind me asking, where is your source for this? i assume you've talked to some former players?
or maybe this is typical muskie misrepresentation, where you make a statement with no basis in truth

and please, please save yourself the embarassment of using norm plummer or trent meacham as examples. plummer was a problem and distraction to the team, and meacham grew up very close to the illini campus and left to fulfill a longtime dream of playing for illinois.
can't blame their leaving on gregory.
as closely as i follow this team, i see nothing that suggests gregory has a poor relationship with his players.

who knows, maybe they both attended x and ud games while they were being recruited and liked the atmosphere at ud better?

i find it so funny that( even with your domination of dayton on the court the last several years) losing a few recruiting battles to my flyers lately gets under your skin a little.

The kid is a sophmore playing in Dayton. This kid will not be that good and if he is he will transfere. Dayton will never never never never be able to sustain the run Xavier has. This kid made a comittment as a Sophmore? If you ask me, I think the kid knows he really isn't that good and that he better take the ship at UD so he can start all 4 years. If he chose another school he knew that he would never play. This kid is very smart, he knew that at UD you have to suck in order to play all 4 years.

50 years ago, when ud was totally dominating the series between the two schools, who would have imagined that x would have cut into our series lead like they have. in fact there were probably ud fans who uttered "xavier will never never never never be able to sustain the run dayton has."

fortunes do change. x has been very spot-on making the right hires over the last 20+ years. once IU snatches miller away, hopefully for your ad will continue to make the right hire. heck, your ad might be lured away, too. honestly though, i think brownell is a better coach than miller, so maybe you will dodge a bullet. if they want either one, they will get them. iu is a much better job than x and wright st. combined.

many posters on this board have the arrogance and superiority complex similar to the kentucky wildcat fans, without all the final fours and such. god help us all if your team actually made it to a final four.

I think some may pick ud over X if they want to be engineers or need programs that Xavier does not offer. The fact that ud get one or two players should not concern X because we have seen how ud grows there players??? over a four year career!

As long as X keep their eye on the ball and remembers it is about education and family first they will attract players that will make them successful.

Joe Joe Joe, it's all gone so very bad for you lately. Let me again correct you.

dayton fans assessment of the Cintas Center still makes me laugh (calling it the "cinderblock). Yes, there is concrete in the arena as part of the construction as there is in the dump but in no way a cold feel.

Cintas: The sightlines are good, not a bad seat in the place. Consessions are great, plenty of space and the lines move fast. Atmosphere is good, loud and electric. Amenities are fantastic. And it doesn't flood with raw sewage.

dump: Sit anywhere in the upper level and good luck seeing anything. Consessions are decent except for standing in a cramped exit hallway back to back with people waiting for a separate line. Atmosphere is weak (go dayton flyers chant, beat Xavier chant, etc.), very quiet especially lately when Xavier comes to town. Amenities are poor, long restroom lines (along with standing in day old urine), luxury boxes are a joke.

As far as recruiting, hows that been working out for the flyers lately? BR sure did make a difference, will CW? What about that 2009 class coming in? Will they be compared to John Wooden's UCLA Bruins?

i can't believe anyone is even bothering to talk about this kid. He is just a sophomore, and regardless of his verbal commitment, he has two years until he signs a letter of intent that will be even remotely meaningful. Plenty of time for him to change his mind or, God forbid, sustain a critical injury, not achieve academic requirements, etc. And even if he manages to someday wear the Dayton red, white, and blue, who's to say he will actually pan out? He wouldn't be the first "sure bet" to fail at the D1 level. I'll save my assessment of the kid until he's actually performing in the Dump.

atmosphere is good, loud, and electric? some of your fellow muskie posters on here seem to disagree with that. i've read many posts complaining about the lack of excitement displayed by the crowds at cintas. i've been to a handful of games there, and while i am not saying the x crowd is subdued, it is closer to that than electric.

i'll take the atmosphere at ud arena over cintas any day of the week. so will the ncaa, there must be some reason ud arena gets to host first round games every five or so years.

no disrespect to cintas, but why hasn't it ever hosted? no "dissing" meant here, just curious. maybe the capacity is below what the ncaa requires?
