Re: Video of Martelli going off on Burrell
It was clearly complimentary. There was nothing demeaning about what he said at all. So what he used language that you don't agree with? He said Xavier is on its way to the top 10. He said it seems like Stan has been around for 9 years because he always has a good game vs. St. Joes. He was in no way demeaning him. Saying that godd*mn burrell makes a 3 against us every year that kills us is not demeaning in any way.

letsgoxu, What part of Sonofabi*** don't you understand? Reading comprehension is fundamental to understanding. When was the last time you heard a coach compliment a player by calling him a SOB (in public). Even Bobby Knight (as unorthodox as he was) had enough class not to call a player, from an opposing team a SOB. Maybe you should look up the word compliment in the dictionary, there is nothing courteous or respectful about calling someone a SOB. Even a back-handed compliment is nothing more than an indirect verbal attack. I happen to see Martelli's interview when he berated Burrell, and his demeanor was mean spirited instead of jovial.
Martelli was bitter and pis**ed off because of the loss to XU and decided to lash out at a kid who was a key element in SJU's defeat...........It is what it is.

Re: Video of Martelli going off on Burrell
Sigma, in all seriousness, when an opposing coach or player berates you, not because you're cheating, playing dirty, being verbally derogatory or anything negative, but instead berates you because of your tremendous and outstanding play against his team....it's a compliment. The more emotional and pi**ed off he is because of YOUR great play...the greater the compliment.
If you've never been in a "truly competitive" situation like this, you probably wouldn't understand. That's not a slam on you. And cursing is not completely uncommon on a college campus. EVERYONE is an adult. They use adult words.
The opposing coach singled him out because of his GREAT play. It's a testament to all of his hard work.
I guarantee that Burrell will never, ever forget what Martelli said. And for the rest of his life, whenever Burrell thinks about it, he will smile.

Re: Video of Martelli going off on Burrell
Sigma, I can say something about Phil Martelli's comments, but I prefer to let Stanley Burrell speak for himself. Told what Martelli said, Burrell laughed, then got serious and said, "Gee, he said that? That's really a compliment."
Perhaps some of us take things too seriously. Martelli has a very deep admiration for Xavier. During the end of the season and before the "run" which included a wicked beating of then unbeaten St. Joseph's, Martelli used his entire press conference after the game in Cintas--which his team won--to react to the boos that rained down on Thad Matta and the Musketeers players. That's when he was most uncomplimentary about those who booed a team that worked its collective butt off and lost. Martelli could not understand how a home crowd could boo its own team. And this was coming from a man from Philadelphia where they once booed Santa Claus at an Eagles game.
Lighten up ! Martelli was joking, and doing it in such a way that he was also flattering Burrell and the entire Xavier team.
Years ago there was a man in our fair city who ran a decency campaign and each year named the "Most Mary-like girl" from among the city's catholic high schools. The award was stopped when the winner for two years in a row was found to be pregnant before graduation. There are people around this town whose nose is so blue that they'll recoil in horror at a picture of a woman nursing her baby or at a woman's naked breast yet make excuses for a prosecutor who copulates with a co-worker to the embarrassment of his wife and children.
I get very upset at those who cry out, "Ooooh, dirty, dirty," and look the other way at white-collar crime. I don't side with the purveyors of porn or those who demean women in any way. I feel the same about anyone who uses children in kiddie porn or any other kind of abuse.
But to find anything other than humor--and believe me, I saw the tape on Channel 12 and Martelli was funny-- in the remarks of a coach whose team just lost a heartbreaking game as he tries to both compliment an opposing player and team and do it in such a way as to not be spouting sour grapes, is just plain sad.

Did you read over what you wrote madxster, you can't be serious. I've played sports all my life and watch sports all the time. Ask yourself, when was the last time you heard a coach call a player a Sonofabi**h (in public) because of their outstanding performance (in college or the pros)? It just doesn't happen, even though they may think it or say it behind close doors, it's not verbalized in a public interview.
There is something called decorum, which adults (coaches) use when speaking in public, and no matter how "urinated off" a coach is about loosing, most maintain a certain amount of decorum and dignity when speaking in a public forum. Riddle me this? Why didn't Martelli call Coach Miller a Sonofabi**h?

I will begin by saying that my understanding of "Sonofab*tch" is just fine, as I use it frequently in conversation.sigma wrote:

Secondly, my comprehension skills are just fine, as the degree I am about to receive from X will indicate. Beyond that, I have also learned some things about context in my 4 years here. Phil Martelli complimented the play of Stanley Burrell. There was absolutely nothing demeaning about what he said at all. What he said may have been unprofessional, but even that is a stretch in my opinion. Of course, someone wouldn't go into a business meeting saying things like that; but in a post game interview, it wasn't really that big of a deal. He doesn't owe anyone an apology. Stan B's feelings weren't hurt.
Martelli making comments about Burrell being in school for 9 years is simply saying that it seems like Burrell has been dominating his team for longer than he really has.

Re: Video of Martelli going off on Burrell
Oh, sweet mother...
Sigma, for someone claiming to play/watch sports all the time, it's shocking that you have never heard a coach or player make a statement about someone else like, "he's one tough S.O.B." Things like that are said all the time. Of course maybe you go to those particular message boards and whine about it there. Being that this was about a Xavier player, we now get to benefit from your words of wisdom.
(By the way, hopefully my opening line didn't offend any mothers that might be tart, bitter, etc. In no way was I trying to put unsweetened mothers in a negative light. For any mothers not considered sweet, I apologize and will work in the future to not be so offensive.)

I am personally offended that you would make reference to my mother on a message board. She is, in fact, a sweet mother. Maybe the sweetest...ever.Xman95 wrote:Oh, sweet mother...

Riddle me this? Why do you keep spelling "losing" as "loosing" in your posts? Are they not as tight as they used to be? It seems you should be worrying about things other than your misinterpretation of what Martelli said.sigma wrote:Riddle me this? Why didn't Martelli call Coach Miller a Sonofabi**h?
