Over the weekend, I saw the replay of the end of a college game in which an inbounding player deliberately played an inbounds pass off the face of an opposing player. Some one refresh me on the game, please.
This immediately brought to mind the infamous Dayton-Evansville game where Crews ordered a certain current Xavier assistant, then an Evansville player, to plonk a Dayton player Crews thought was faceguarding too close. Said coach still gets the boos when he walks on the floor at UD Arena.
I am unaware of any comparable plays in college basketball.

I'm pretty sure you are refering to the washington UCLA game. Washington was out of timeouts and the inbounder didnt want to take the 5 second call

Re: Facegate revisited.
Seeing as how all the subsequent "...gate" names came from the events involving the Watergate Hotel, and not the Water Hotel, shouldn't that event be called Watergate-gate?

Thou dost err, Gate-breath!Mr. Neutral wrote:Seeing as how all the subsequent "...gate" names came from the events involving the Watergate Hotel, and not the Water Hotel, shouldn't that event be called Watergate-gate?
There was no water, nor any gate, then or now. (Thomas G. Savage, give me strength!) This is a linguistic device, the name of which is on the tip of my tongue, that involves the assumption of some secondary, entirely unrelated meaning in a word. Saffire knows.
Oh wait, this is why I get that high horse stuff (I just couldn't resist). Too clever by half, shut up Carlos.

Carlos, was that post the result of yesterday's drinking, or are you starting VERY early for Wednesday? (Both of which are admirable, of course.)

<<here was no water, nor any gate, then or now.>>
"Watergate is a general term for a series of political scandals during the presidency of Richard Nixon, that began with five men being arrested after breaking and entering into the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate hotel complex in Washington, D.C. on June 17, 1972. The scandal reached to the top levels of American government, and the attempted cover-up of the break-in would ultimately lead to Nixon's dramatic resignation on August 9, 1974."
I know you know this, Carlos, so I'm somewhat confused at what you mean.

This thread is already out of control, so I'm going to give it another push off line without guilt.Mr. Neutral wrote:Carlos, was that post the result of yesterday's drinking, or are you starting VERY early for Wednesday? (Both of which are admirable, of course.)
Wednesday, Mr. N? Er, it's only Tuesday. Yes, my post, is upon cursory review, cryptic and incomprehensible. I did smoke a little rope on the weekend, but I do believe I was sober -- just goofy.
I was attempting to comment on your gate-gate post with some wiseguy English major lingo. I could not come up with the linguistic term that describes a word --or in this case, suffix, to wit "-gate" -- which takes on a meaning totally separate from it's original meaning and usage. I still can't think of the term. Which is why I no longer teach lit, and just scribble away, figuratively, here. Savage would be disappointed.
I apologize to the class and promise never to do it again. Please do not send Chris Mack to smack me down with the inbound pass.
