DBrown- Jeckyll & Hyde

Postby Masterofreality » Fri Feb 08, 2008 8:50 am

Let me lead this off by saying that I love DBrown. The kid has incredible upside and will get better. He has insane skills.

But....

Last night was a Dr. Jeckyll/Mr. Hyde performance. The last tip in was a phenomenal basketball play, but it basically rescued his evening. When D's basketball IQ catches up with his physical skills, he will be unstoppable.

The Good- 9 rebounds, 2 three pointers, the winning tip in, good defensive effort, great mental resiliancy.

The Bad- Second half start missing two close-up bunnies and a turnover giving St. Louis hope as they scored on their first 3 posessions; Driving under the basket with no idea then turning it over twice- one in the first half where he hit the bottom of the basket and once in the second half; The unbelieveably ill-advised play with 1:49 to go after Myers missed free throw and Xavier up 9 with the ball. Josh gives the ball up to D who, even though he has CJ Anderson wide a$$ open on the baseline or can hang on to the ball himself, decides to throw a poor backward cross court pass back to Josh into the defense. Result? Josh's 5th foul, Meyer gets back to the line and the Billikens' comeback starts.

D. C'mon, man, think time and score. You have a 9 point lead and the ball. You shoot 85% from the foul line. Game over unless a brain lock occurrs, and it did.

In summary, D redeemed himself, but this is the kind of stuff that gives coaches premature gray hair. I'm sure that the coaches will be using this as a teaching point in film review today.

I think DBrown still makes sophomore mistakes, thankfully last night he got away with them. It seems to be youth and I would blame that on the coaching staff. Get him ready for these situations, make it known you can win it at the free throw line and its still a win, the clock is your friend.

The missed layups is just bad. There is no way he should miss easy hoops from under the basket. But again, it happens, he got away with it and what wonderful court sense to get to the rim and get that tip in.

It seems like we've had problems finishing inside for several games now. Duncan, Brown, Love and others all get shots right at the rim, but they don't go down, and all too often, we don't get fouled, either.

C.J.'s about the only guy who either gets the hoop or goes to the line.

I disagree a little bit with throwing Duncan into that mix from last night's performance. I thought he was solid around the rim most of the night. Contested shots are not going to go in everytime, even at point blank range. I thought Duncan had some really nice finishes last night and CJ is always solid, D. Brown missed a couple in close last night but he has probably been our most consistent finisher all season. Love need to work on finishing, but I'd be lying if I said I thought he be this good at this point in time.

D. Brown only has 6 less FT attempts than CJ at this point

Brown throw back to Duncan, I'd bet, was to take time off the clock but he should have taken it strong to the basket. Joe said it looked like he might have gotten a travel charge if he didn't so maybe that came into his thinking. On the other hand an early charge foul and a couple of no calls when he went up might have also lingered in his brain. Next time he probably will do it and his David West style tip-in will be remembered by fans longer because of the win than the rest of the game...except for Sean. I am still shaking my head over Drew great drive at the end. Lark said he wanted it sooner but Drew, I'l wager, said to himself; "let's not give that Lish kid another chance"

This time the Kyle Korver impersonator didn't get the chance to be a hero.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

You have to take the bad with the good with an aggressive player like D. Brown. And that's a trade-off I'm happy to make. Sure it may result in a few turnovers, but when it works it results in a great deal of momentum for the team, a good number of steals, and, of course, last second tips.

As he progresses he's surely limit some of those turnovers, but he's a sophomore. Give him a break.

Miller was VERY direct in his postgame comments as to how unhappy he was with Brown re that late turnover. He said Brown has to show more maturity and brains, and not make that kind of big mistake in a close game. From his comments, it seemed like he had had this conversation with Brown on previous occasions.

I was glad to see him hit a couple of three's although I'll admit I was yelling "no" when he shot them.If he can add an outside shot to his game he will be unstoppable. That pass to Duncan was horrible and it caused Duncan to commit his fifth foul.Fortunately he got some redemption at the end.

Duncan also threw a couple of horrible passes in the game which also cost us two possessions. Josh is the one player that Sean always seems to give a free ride in his post game critiques.

Duncan's passing in the last 2 games has been rather suspect.
