Re: Steele to Miami OH
He had also really never played basketball and having his father in law had a lot to do with the decision to hire him. It worked with Mack and Miller but they were for we players and tougher as coaches. He was too soft and had poor rotations and lineups, which is a problem no matter what team he coaches. That is not just according to me but many others. Just look at how different X was without Scruggs at the point and playing Free less minutes. Colby, Free, and Odom were gone if Steele hadn’t been replaced. I guess Scruggs isn’t the heart and soul of the team, Johnson and AK are not the best shooters in the country, and Miles is not the best defensive player in the BE.

I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

So, what’s the over/under on when Miami University (of Ohio) announces a large donation for a basketball strength and conditioning center? I got two months.

Tommy Lloyd may want to have a word with you. Chris Mack would, too. Oh, forgot Sean Miller. It CAN work. it just didn't in this case. he had 10+ years under his belt at X. he just didn't get it done.xavier71 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 02, 2022 1:13 pmI respectfully disagree that TS deserved the Xavier job. If loyalty is your only criteria, than maybe he deserved the job, but if winning basketball is your criteria, it was completely the wrong decision, as I pointed out the day he was hired. He had never even been head coach of a grade school team and to then start your coaching career in a power conference was a no win situation for him and X. If he had been head coach at Miami for 4 years and then came to X he might have succeeded. There are very few instances of asst. coaches succeeding at power conferences. You can do it in the Mac, A-10, Horizon etc., but it's rare in the big conferences. Look at the Big East this year. Every coach (6) that made the NCAA had been a head coach at a smaller school before getting the Big East job. Other schools sometimes make the same mistake as we did. Chris Mullin, Patrick Ewing, WoJo to name a few. St. John and Marquette then hired a coach who had been a head coach prior. Georgetown will probably do the same down the road.

You may want to go back and read my post again. I said, "there are very FEW instances of asst. coaches succeeding in power conferences". I didn't say it never happens. Also, when Miller and Mack got the job we were in the A-10. Mack had 3 full seasons in the A-10 before we joined the Big East. He never went from asst. to head coach straight into the Big East. Miller never coached in the Big East. If we were still in the A-10, I would have had no problem with Steele getting the job. The whole point of my post is you don't give someone there first head coaching job ever and throw them into the Big East.

Hubert Davis played at the highest level of basketball as well and was a top analyst that trumps Steeles junior high basketball careeer.

Wow!!! I think some people might want to re-read my post. To repeat: I said, there are very few instances of asst. coaches succeeding at power conferences after being promoted to head coach. That also applies to first head coaching job in power conferences. I DIDN'T say it never has happened or will never happen.olsingledigit wrote: ↑Tue Apr 05, 2022 7:39 pmHubert Davis at NC.
