He did have a TO left but he choose not to use it until after Bynum hit an uncontested shot to put game out of reach another coaching blunder

"uncontested"? you talking about his last 3 in the 3OT that made it a 5 pt game? if so, c'mon now. dude was a good 10-15 ft behind the line.

you only get ONE in OT. it was a 2 pt game at that time. he didn't NEED to use it up until then. please.

My comment about substituting players inappropriately was generally directed to early in games (lot of slow starts this year) and the player pulled was not winded.

I fully support pulling guys when they need a breather. Not doing anyone any good when sucking air.

Xavier has been real lucky to be "a cradle of great coaches".. X has hired a number of good coaches that have become great coaches while at Xavier and thus moved on to "better paying jobs" at other Universities. Xavier has not had a "bad to average" men's basketball coach which needed firing. X may be at that cross road? When the coaches are great, they leave on there own for higher paying jobs.

Miller found it very hard to leave X for a Top 15 job in cbb, when X was in the A-10. Mack left for a Top 10 job and also found it very hard. People much closer to the program than me have said he would not have taken it without the strong prodding from his wife. X is in one of the best leagues in the country, and until recently, a mainstay as one of the top 25 programs in the country, and was one of the most consistent performers in the Tourney. They have also been consistently ranked as one of the top CBB programs by Forbes, and the coach doesn't have to compete for dollars or attention with a football program. They can't compete financially with the Bluebloods, but can put together a financial package comparable to most. Rumors have it the package to Mack was over 3 MM annually, after Mman and OSD anteed up.

Despite the stunning freefall of the program, Steele, to his and the other recruiters on the staff's credit, reeled in another Top 10 class. However, each year gives other schools a lot of ammunition when competing with X for a recruit. The season isn't over, even though I think making it to the Tourney will only prolong the misery. Definitely at a crossroads. We are now Memphis North.

Substitution patterns alone is a major issue. There have been multiple games where coach pulled the 1 player playing at a high level and left others in the lineup that were playing horribly.

I'm all for making changes when things are not going well but to pull the 1 guy that was actually scoring and playing defense and leaving the 1 or 2 others that are making obvious mistakes is insane.

I can't think of a redeeming quality about his coaching at this point.
To me among all issues this is the biggest. He really just seems to trot out his same rotations without regard for whether they make sense or what players make sense in a given game. A few examples that stand out:

1. Not playing Odom enough when he’s the only true point guard.

2. As has been stated sticking with 3 point shooters for too long in a game when they’re cold.

3. Deonte miles. This is a huge one for me. Steele seems obsessed with running free and nunge out there, both plus offensive players and average to horrific defenders. Clearly miles is not polished offensively but he played reasonably well in the early season and in some games it would be nice to have a strong defender/rebounder in to actually complement one of those guys.

4. Scruggs and Colby together. Despite colbys good game yesterday, these two guys are basically the same player except scruggs is a bit more athletic and Colby is a better rebounder. They both are tweeners that constantly stop the ball, get caught under the rim, make questionable passes, and generally aren’t polished enough on offense to beat big East level defenders regularly (except paul when he goes on the occasional run.) playing them both simultaneously so much is not complimentary at all and makes no sense.

5. Treating free like he’s still all big East. He’s not. And maybe it’s from the injury still, foot issues are tough for big guys. But he’s not. And rotating him in and letting him put up shots like he is is stupid.

still going to let this season play out and see how they respond these next two weeks.

if Steele somehow manages to coach this team OUT of the tourney, then it's time to move on.
