OT-6 Part 2

Postby SC in DC » Sat Oct 23, 2021 12:46 pm

OK, I'm winding down and that's good because soon we will have real bball to talk about. (Damn Freemantle's foot injury).

Again, the Friday, Oct 21, 1966 edition of the Xavier News had a lot, and is special to me because it had a picture of my first wife running for the fall weekend Queen contest (she came in second :x ), but of more significance was the fact that both the Mount and OLC (Our Last Chance as it was affectionately called for those of you too young to remember) would not allow their girls to compete. The decision was based on an agreement made in the 1930's that stated, in effect, that their students could not compete in Xavier activities. (?) The weekend also included a car demolition with sledge hammer provided for a small fee, and the first running of a four-man chariot race. (oh those college kids!)
Also, for the Masque Society fans (you know who you are!) Their production of "The Birthday Party" was postponed due to the death of one of the actor's family members.
Major Headline was "LOCAL GROUPS STRIVE FOR SAFETY". "The men and women, Negro and white, who live among Xavier University, are very much concerned about the safety of their entire community......(it continues)...the police have said that the lighting in some sections the university are '13years behind the times.' " (how'd they come up with that #?)

Gilligan vs Taft was a big election coming up for the first congressional district of Ohio, and both candidates will come and speak on campus. Followed by a debate between the young Rep's and Dem's and finish with a Mock election! (Don't know who won at X, but altho Gilligan later became the 62nd Governor of Ohio--Taft won).

Final two items (for those of you still reading). Dr Larkin announced that the computer center will offer 3 sections of non-credit instruction in Fortran II using the IBM 1620 for $20. Also, since Dr Link got some of the old timers attention, I should mention the whole back page was an ad for the Vernon Manor, "Cincinnati's Grand Old Lady"...with modern ideas, "An address of distinction" and on and on.

Great to read your reminiscing. I was at X a few years later but remember some of the things you are writing about. I remember the riot in Avondale as I was bringing a guy back to X and his instructions were to turn Right on Reading but I forgot and turned Left. I didn't know there was a riot until I saw the firetrucks and fires...I thought it was just a fire until a cop told me to get out of there but I went down a side street which turned out to be a dead-end filled with some rioters, hey I was following another car and thought he knew the area, anyway it is a long story so I will not bore you. I do thank GOD every day that he somehow got me out of the area with no damage to my Dad's car...I was more worried what he would do to me than the rioters.

I remember the OUR LAST CHANCE but we were allowed to go to their mixers as well as The mount.
Do you remember Edna from the registrar's office? She was Homecoming queen one year before I go to X.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

She was a hoot and the darling of many students that needed some help in registration. The long lines came to Alter in my time. On line wasn't even a dream.
