JOHN CHANEY

Postby muskieman » Sat Jan 30, 2021 1:58 pm

RIP... caustic but successful coach 89 years old died last night after a short illness. Everyone has a John Cheney story. I met him after an X game twice once he was a complete ass and the second time as nice as you grandma.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

Hated his zone defense, but had to respect it. RIP John.

At times he would have his players do things which left me wondering how can he forcibly command a player to cause injury to another opposing player. I remember how we were up by a bunch at home against Temple (2002-2003 season) and he kept having his players commit fouls like crazy. I just never understood that. I don't know what kind of teaching moment could come out of such behavior. Regardless, he was quite a character.

Teaches eager, young impressionable minds to solve disagreements with physical confrontation. What could possibly go wrong?

RIP Chaney, a lot of the years of good you did were overshadowed by moments like this. However, the hundreds of lives you improved is your legacy.

I have to add that Chaney/Temple would play anyone, anywhere!
I always admired that and believe that it better prepared his teams than not.
