Loss to Wisconsin

There are a lot of issues with this team as noted. X was slow to react which allowed Wisconsin to get a bunch of extra rebounds and easy scores. Offensively the team is playing with a low basketball IQ. Shooting was obviously a problem and will likely continue to be a problem for much of the year.

Despite all the problems they probably would have won had the refs not made several glaring mistakes. Early in the game an official called Scruggs for a foul that should have been on Wisconsin. That call lead to Scruggs spending more time on the bench than planned in the first half. Hard to know how things would have played out if the right call was made here.

More importantly the foul on Marshall at the end was just wrong. Both players were moving and Marshall wasn't trying to set a screen so I don't see how you call that. About a minute or so of game time prior to that Scruggs was called for the block but the Wisconsin player ducked his shoulder and plowed into Scruggs. That is an automatic charge. If X gets the ball there and then Q gets the 3, X is up. X getting the ball on the charge would likely change the sequence of events but it gets X closer much earlier with even more momentum.

I didn't love the effort or the mental awareness of the team. X deserved to lose. Wisconsin folded down the stretch so they didn't deserve to win either but got just enough calls in their favor to make it happen.

this post smells of "blaming the refs" too much. too much focus put on "if this call would've went our way, then......." guess what? good teams overcome poor officiating. you're not going to get every call and when you look at it through your X glasses, you're going to scrutinize every call that doesn't go X's way. that just won't work.

X didn't deserve to win for a multitude of reasons - mostly for the lack of defensive focus/effort in the first 5 minutes of the 2nd half that got Wiscy a double digit lead. and the poor shooting from 3 and the FT line didn't help. 5 for 24? gotta shoot better especially at home. Welage can't get any better looks than he's getting so i'm not sure what the problem is. If Redford had those looks he'd be shooting 70% from 3. Goodin doesn't need to shoot as many as he does but he will learn that that's not his "game" and hopefully become the true PG we need.

12 offensive rebounds didn't help either. fix the defensive breakdowns, the 2nd chance points (off rebounds), etc.

It seems that neither Goodin nor Scruggs is a true point guard, but what is most alarming is the defense that Goodin was attempting to play yesterday. The recruiting woes that last two years are beginning to show, especially at PG. Is Harden hurt because I find it really incredible that he can't provide some doesn't meetings over Kennedy especially since he is supposedly our second best shooter. Jones was acting like a fourth grader and Hankins needs to realize to stop running his month unless he can back it up. Hack a Happ should have started earlier.

Goodin is a pg, but must have hit his head and now thinks he's Tre Bluiett. He is very good scoring and distributing in the lane. Any team with gladly concede the 3 to him. Scruggs dribbles too high and wide to be an effective dribbler. He has the potential to be a very good scorer, especially when he backs his defender into the lane.

They are not a good 3 point shooting team, but when you take bad 3's, it magnifies the deficiency. Welage is the only one who should have the green light. However, Goodin obviously does too. Hopefully, the film session will open Steele's eyes, and he'll reign him, and Marshall in.

Bluiett and Macura's ability to hit a lot of long bombs tended to mask playmaking deficiencies of not really having a playmaking pg. They still have guys that can shoot the ball deep, but time will tell if they are consistent enough to continue in the same style as they've become used to. I'm not sure the current guys are as adept at getting open and getting shots against better teams. One thing's for sure, they will find out.

Good point coach. We don't really have anyone that can hit a shot when we really need it like JP or Tre plus having someone like O'mara to throw it into and get a bucket or a foul. Too bad Gates couldn't stand Mack and left we could use him.

I'm sure that's why Gates left (#not) - because if EVERYONE knew that Mack was gone, then WHY would he leave if he knew he was going to get to play for someone different?
