Re: Georgetown Game thread 01/22/2017
I'd like to see Q shoot when he gets into the lane. He had a couple wide open looks just inside the foul line and tried to pass instead. I like the bigs shooting an occasional 10-12 footer also. I think it could stretch the D if they did more. Gaston last game and Sean this game took one. Other teams just flood the middle and let us shoot 3's. Open up the middle a bit.

I'd love to see that as well, but he has not shown the ability to make that shot. Not since Tu has X had a PG who had the ability to do so.

When Semaj went into the lane, he went to the rim. I don't recall him making many 10 footers in the lane. I remember him shooting more free throws than anyone body else on the team, and don't think it was even close. That was mainly a consequence of getting fouled taking it to the hole.skyhops wrote:Semanj?
Sumner is starting to take more and more in the 10 foot range, which at 6'6", he should have plenty of opportunities to do. Tu was the consummate pg.
He was strong with the ball, great dribbler and passer, scored equally well from the outside and driving to the bucket, and was deadly at the f.t. line. He was a tenacious defender as well. This team could definitely use him. I think he would get in JP and Tre's ear when they throw up 27 footers 6 seconds into the shot clock.

I thought it was interesting that before the game Chris said the keys to the game were: out rebound them (35-21); not turn the ball over (10); not commit offensive fouls; and not foul them when they are driving to the basket. (Not sure how many of our fouls were offensive but we only committed 17 total). I think they succeeded on all counts, but I think they need to find a way to still play defense while not fouling them. There were times when they ran that Princeton offense so well, it was beautiful to watch, and painful at the same time. Overall, a good win! If we can pull out wins over UC and St. Johns, (both on the road), I think we will be back on track and rolling into February with momentum.

I know Q is just a freshman but he has not shown signs of improvement. He doesn't seem to be able to score in any manner. He averages 14 minutes per game and averages 2+ points per game. A point guard who shoots under 50% from the line??? We need him to get better especially with Myles gone.
Another problem is Sumner's shoulder. It seemed to be bothering him quite a bit this eve. Does he need surgery? If so he would be out for the year. I would think he would do what is best for his future career.

Wins over UC and St. John's on the road are possible, but I don't have confidence X will pull off both. Hopefully I'm proven wrong.commish118 wrote:I thought it was interesting that before the game Chris said the keys to the game were: out rebound them (35-21); not turn the ball over (10); not commit offensive fouls; and not foul them when they are driving to the basket. He has improved a lot. His turnovers have been reduced substantially and he is probably the best defensive freshmen point guard that Xavier has had for years. Too many people tend to judge players only on their scoring contribution.hoosiermuskie wrote:I know Q is just a freshman but he has not shown signs of improvement. Re: Georgetown Game thread 01/22/2017
Q is 15-32 on two point attempts, just under 48%. This doesn't tell me he can't hit a foul line jumper nor how many times he's tried. He definitely struggles from 3 so far but the kid averaged over 20 puts a game in high school, so he can shoot. I say shoot more and get confident. We need the short range jumper cause we can't always get to the rim but can get penetration to the lane. Pass if someone's open but shoot when you're wide open in the lane. It'll come.
