BPI, Ken Pon , and RPI

Postby muncie6569 » Fri Dec 23, 2016 2:44 pm

Would someone please share , with those of us that are bewildered, about the computer rankings systems? There is such a big difference between one service and another regarding Xavier's ranking. Which is more accurate and why? It seems in the past RPI and BPI were a big part of seeding and NCAA tournament placement, is that still true? Because X is VERY high in those rankings. I seldom hear Sangrain mentioned at all anymore, why is that? I also see fans on message boards discount the computer rankings until the first of the year or conference play but by mid December they always seem to match up pretty well with the polls. So anyone that is knowledgeable about this willing to give us a 101 ?

My opinion (not expert) The RPI is not accurate in at least the first 10 games .It uses. only wins and losses no home court advantage and no margin of victory. The others have different starting points at the beginning of the season, different home court advantage and other unexplainable statistics. They somehow come together at tournament time

All of the ratings are based on certain formulas and seem to be different results (CBS sports and ESPN) don't always agree. The only thing that is true is the rating ARE THE SAME FOR ALL SCHOOLS so least we have that. Every school probably thinks they are getting the short end of the straw. Go Xavier!

Mack is partial to KenPom, particularly offensive and defensive, etc., ratings--and tweets them in his little pregame promos.
