Gavitt Challenge

Postby XU80 » Fri Nov 18, 2016 8:55 am

So, the results for this year are 4-4. BE getting nice road win by Seton Hall at Iowa. Props to Creighton beating Wisconsin at home. The loss/meltdown by Georgetown cost BE bragging rights for this year. I was hoping Providence could come back and beat OSU but comeback came up short.

I think this result further reinforces the BE belongs in the conversation with the top echelon of college hoops.

Looks like the BE 18 games will be another bruttal battle. Davis and Gates can't comeback soon enough to get ready for this war.

SJU comes back but ends up with the L.
It's a 4-4 split. Not bad.

Attended the DePaul-Rutgers game Thursday night (yes, I know, need to get a life). Only excuse to provide is that both of DePaul's big men were out and Rutgers won the boards by 19. Rutgers 66 DePaul 59. Game not as close as the final score.

Only about 1,200 in attendance for these two bad teams and Billy Garrett, Jr. is in a real funk to start the 2016-17 campaign. Garrett, Jr. shot 1-11 and scored 5 points in 22 minutes. He fouled out with 8 minutes to go.

Highlight of the night was when we were walking through the tunnel to enter the Arena (we attend a pre-game booster-type confab). We saw Coach Rick Carter heading toward the court and my son, a '12 X grad, chimed "Go X." Coach Carter turned and gave that knowing smile.

Has to be frustrating for Garrett to play for a team that has lost 2/3rds of their games over the past 3 seasons.
Probably not what he had hoped for when he came there to play.
Guess we will see how year 2 of Leitao 2.0 shakes out.

Without a doubt the BE is a top 5 conference.
They are currently ranked as the 3rd best conference by Ken Pom and they were 3rd last year (15-16) in his rankings and 2nd the year (14-15) before that.
I'm glad that the conference is 10 teams and they play a 18 home and home league schedule.
It will be an 18 game war.
Agree - will need Myles and Kaiser to come back and be key contributors.

Out of shear boredom, and because the kids had control of our big-screen downstairs, I watched the SJU vs Minn. game last eve. Good golly, must be easily 200+ mid-major to low-major head coaches that would stare & drool at the Johnnies' raw talent. Too bad their current coach has zero clue how to mold a team.........
Having coached youth, as in even 3rd & 4th grade, one of the first things you teach is to GET BACK ON "D"...! Too bad even that escapes this current St. John squad. You might have not wasted 2 hrs as I, and you might have surmised "gee, they almost came back to catch those pesky Gophers" In reality, for most of the 1st half, SJU was kicking Minn's ass. Easily looked to be the more talented team. Ahhh, there is that "talent" word again. Too bad coaches, (well most coaches), are allowed to analyze game flow & tendencies then make adjustments. Chris Mullin must not have known he was allowed to adjust after Minn initially adjusted. Mullen's team is completely undisciplined on offense and risk takers on "D". They look an awful lot like a glorified summer AAU group. Unfortunately, when they get on a roll, that momentum can feed on itself. Albeit those instances should be few & far between this season. Let's hope it's not when they are playing X.
Thanks Coach Mullin. Thanks for consistently playing far below your potential year after year in the all important pre-league aspect of your schedule. If not for Georgetown so far, you would stick out even more like the hot-mess that you are.
