What a beast Bob Pelkington was. He was listed at 6'7" and he was muscle from head to toe. He could score a bit also!teek wrote:Best rebounder: Bob Pelkington!!

Xavier always goes to the NCAA tournament, and almost always makes some noise while there. Projecting anything less than that this season feels like folly--Eamonn Brennan (ESPN Summer Shootaround, 2012)

Re: Pre-season polls
Agreed that being rated in the early polls guarantees nothing and wins no National Championships or automatic NCAA berths.
Nonetheless, being rated high early and late does have value. If a team is rated in the #20-# 25 slots and loses, the team usually drops out of the Top 25 (unless the loss comes at the hands of a highly-ranked team). Teams in the Top 10 can lose and still easily maintain a spot in the Top 25.
How soon we forget how X used to have to scratch and claw back up the ladder and into the Top 25 after a defeat. Maintaining a higher poll spot does assist in NCAA seeding.
Again, no disagreement, the early rankings win no games in the Tournament. However, the path can be made a bit easier and the margin for error from Day One is better for highly ranked teams, to say nothing of the tool for recruiting purposes.

Re: Pre-season polls
Pre-season polls can have a big PR benefit. Name recognition influences potential recruits, among other ancillary benefits.
Mark Twain was wrong. Golf is NOT a good walk spoiled. It is a shared personal experience in a majestic wonderland guided by God, whose name is called frequently during the round.

Re: Pre-season polls
I totally agree that pre season polls mean nothing but there has been some ***** on the practices that is highly encouraging.
No sources will be given but in the past they have been spot on. The 3 perimeter players are the best combination X has ever had and it is not even close. Also, the bigs are solid but not deep. Jones has been a very pleasant surprise.
I would rather be ranked lower giving the team a chip on the shoulder but your not going to fool anybody with Sumner and Bluiett who will both be collecting paychecks next year. Sumner has said to be the most desirable prospect for the NBA in the history of the program.
Cant wait for the season to start.

Re: Pre-season polls
Somewhat interesting stats on the AP Preseason poll (data from Brian Mull at NCAA.com):
Since '84-'85 there have been 776 teams ranked in the AP Top 25 Preseason Polls, with 86% going on to earn an NCAA Tournament berth. Last year, in '15-'16 the only preseason ranked team to miss was #21 LSU. If memory serves, LSU's coach would not be characterized as a highly respected Head Coach.
In the last 11years, 36 of the 44 #1 Seeds were garnered by teams ranked in the preseason Top Ten.
Lastly, of the 384 teams ranked in the Top 12 since '84-'85, all but 22 have made the Dance.
Again, no guarantees, bit a pretty good predictor of March Madness.
