Case in Point: Our Beat Writer has yet to mention anything regarding the announcement of Xavier's team captains. Significant offseason news in my opinion. Yet, she is commenting on Miami's women's basketball coach being fired.
What's most discouraging is that messageboards break news faster than her, and not by minutes, but hours. I understand in today's day and age that it is tough to break news with twitter and the internet, but you can still be timely, and she is not. And you'd think she'd break something.
I know I'm being fairly harsh and critical, but I challenge someone to provide me with a time when Shannon either a) broke news or b) provided a solid statistical analysis of a game. And that just doesn't include FG%.
In her defense, she is probably being severly underpaid, but if you have a job, do it right. I know I'm not alone with these feelings.

How much you think an XU beat writer gets paid? I honestly have no idea, 50k?

I have no idea. However, the computer/internet says $25,000 to $45,000.

Just from talking with a former employee of the Enquirer, I'm under the impression in the 25-30k range.DrewCarrey wrote:How much you think an XU beat writer gets paid? I honestly have no idea, 50k?
I've also been told that a beat writer has a give and take relationship in college. Coaches provide the scoop, and the beat writer provides recruiting scoops. If you think about this, it makes perfect sense. Jeff Goodman almost acted as our pseudo-beat writer last season, breaking almost all our news. I'm willing to bet he gave some tips to Mack on recruiting in return. Brett McMurphy has been breaking a ton of news for X lately. I'm sure he was monumental in providing the scoop for Big East talks.

Re: Big East News
Though it's been many long years, I doubt Shannon makes more than $48,000. The pecking order at the Enq (a Gannett paper) is Reds and Bengals and for a change of pace, Bengals and Reds. Everything else takes second or third fiddle. Several former sports staffers are retired and back stringing or contributing. The Enky recently added former Post staffer Trent Rosencrans as alternate or backup Reds writer. I don't know if stringers get more than $75 a story or assignment. Maybe $100-$125.
Paul Daugherty is probably the highest paid sports staffer. There is no union and I can guarantee you the UC beat writer makes more than Shannon and now with Groeschen taking over the football beat I would imagine there have been few bumps in salaries.
And don't forget the mandatory unpaid furloughs of two weeks a year, and a lot less travel so reporters can't live on their expense accounts as they used to do.
But remarkably, it's still a job people would kill to have and I really loved my days beneath the mast-head.
As far as Shannon not breaking a lot of news, why should she? She and her rag have no competition. Period. None.

I give Shannon a break because she is dealt a winnable hand with how the Enquirer supports their (and especially the X) writers. She was asked to fill in here and there and not focus on just X except during basketball season(and then they furloughed her). She must think she is trying to keep a 1 ton weigh in the air as someone throws her a scoop once and a while. She does have good interviews with players from time to time but that is all at the whim of the basketball program.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

If true, it seems a little odd that you would even be on MM and posting.southernmuskie wrote:"Case in Point: Our Beat Writer has yet to mention anything regarding the announcement of Xavier's team captains. Significant offseason news in my opinion."

Like I said, I'm a huge Xavier fan and frequently check this board. I just don't think it's that big of a deal that the Enquirer isn't talking about XU's captains for next season.
To me, it's just not that big of a story in the grand scheem of things.

Re: Big East News
I understand why nothing was put in print. But why not put it on her blog online? Or even tweet it? Or even better, retweet Chris Mack? That takes a ton of effort! The lack of captain information is indicative of her performance as a beat writer. And that's maybe why ESPN's college FOOTBALL reporter broke news regarding the new AD.southernmuskie wrote:Like I said, I'm a huge Xavier fan and frequently check this board.
