 Gary,
You were much milder than I expected.
As for the team, I thought their games against Temple and AZ ST were worse, really.
Just some things to note:
*The three seniors should have a special place in the Xavier Athletic Hall of Fame for their contributions to the season. Stanley was right. This was the best ever Xavier team. If I had my way, there would be a special place for their jerseys, just the names not the numbers, in the Cintas rafters. Those three deserve induction into the X Hall right away. Why wait? And please, it certainly wouldn't cheapen the achievements of those already in the hall.
*I believe Sean was dead on right in what he said about going as far as Xavier could go considering the team they played today. That, my friends was not only a team worthy of a No. 1 seed, but many of those guys will move on to the NBA eventually, if not sooner. You realize that every tournament is seeded with the idea that the No.1s will meet in the finals and play each other for the national championship.
*I could not be more proud of this team from lofty senior to the last sub to the walk ons. I believe this year Xavier showed the SEC, the Big Ten and the Big East why the Musketeers were seeded No. 3. They also showed they weren't to be taken lightly.
There comes a time in every season, in every tournament when you play a team that is that much better than you are. Please let's not let our expectations get in the way of our affection and admiration, as well as our pride in this team.
*There is only one place for Xavier to go under Sean Miller and that's up. And really, there are only two more games to be won. But there is a time when realism and acceptance of limitations have to take the place of expectations. Today, sadly, was that time.
*I believe in Derrick Brown, B.J. Raymond, Dante Jackson and C.J. Anderson we have the nucleus of an excellent team next season. I also think we can expect more from Adrion and Charles.
*I don't believe we can expect the four freshmen and the transfers, other than Bronson, to make a big impact. It's one thing for Kenny Frease and Brad Redford, Walsh and Cheeks to carry a lot of hardware with them to the next level in their careers. It's another thing to demand that they live up to the assessments made of them by so-called recruiting experts who make their living pumping up the egos of high school players. Yes, these incoming recruits carry fine credentials. But they're also freshmen. And they will be expected to stay at Xavier, develop and more important, earn a college degree.
*Following Xavier was like opening a Christmas present during each game. Sometimes we were delighted with what we got. Other times it was, "Oh, thank you." The delights outnumbered the "Oh, thank yous" 30-7.
Finally, if you look back over the three games that led to the Elite eight berth, tell me you didn't delight in that first come-from-behind win over Georgia, and then the topping of Purdue who'll be even better next year. And if you didn't enjoy or delight in Byron's and Joe's call of B.J.s shots, if you didn't jump for joy when that clock showed 00.00 and a win over the Coiffed One and his West Virginia team, then you are just full of....

Gary, you're right. This was one of the worst, if not the worst, game of the season when looking at the outcome, the numbers, etc. But I really think a HUGE factor was the hangover from the WVU game the other day. That OT battle took a lot out of this team and I think it was obvious being that they were slower on D, didn't have the legs on their jumpers, didn't have much spring during the rebounding battles, etc. There's no way I can prove that's what the problem was, but I do think they were worn out. Against a team like UCLA, that's going to be a big problem.

Correction: Xavier has been to the Elite Eight twice in five years, not four:

2004: Elite Eight
2005: No postseason
2006: Lost to Gonzaga in first round
2007: Lost to Ohio State in second round
2008: Elite Eight

Ok, so I'm off a year. Believe me, I watch every X game....and I live in CLT and refuse to go to a Bobcat game because of Morrison....even though he hardly plays. Punk.

Elite 8 twice in 5 years...still pretty damn good.

Like Temple, Arizona State and Miami we just had a bad night. The kids seemed tight. It happens. UCLA played great and we just didn't. It happens to everyone. Hats off to UCLA tonight and hats off to our guys who made us all proud this year.

This was a great season and X did play poorly. Neutral, I do disagree about CJ. The problem is that while X is that second tier team behind the #1 seeds, Texas, and probably Tennessee, this year, the #1s are that good. At one point, UCLA had made the same amount of shots, X had more rebounds, UCLA had more turnovers and a 7 point lead late in first half. X was 33% vs UCLA at 50%. X played scared in first half. Missed free throws and point blank baskets. How many times did Love or Anderson have shots with no one between themselves in the basket and still get blocked. Duncan found that his size, shot, and enhanced abilities in the tourney is seen by UCLA all year. My only issue with Miller was why he never went to a zone until late when X was down 20 and allowed UCLA to get waste 30 seconds and score. However, X overpowered the A-10 this year with these shot opportunities. They rarely played against team that other than the defender in front of them did they get blocked by someone else. They got beat by a better team. I hope Miller keeps the programming, scheduling, and recruiting as he has. They are on track to really stay special. That pack line defense is good vs A-10 but did get exposed with better athletes in the tourney. Overall though, I agree with most of your points but UCLA had a lot to do with X's bad game just as X did with most of our opponents. As for the seniors, they had a great run but were the primary reason for the loss tonight.

Finally, Raymond didn't play much tonight or vs WVU. I don't know if it was defense or what but that has to change next year. X will be good for years to come. I can't wait.

MR. NEUTRAL POSTED ON HOW THEY PLAYED AGAINST UCLA....

Josh-awful.
Drew-awful
Stan-beyond awful
C.J.-awful

I Agree totally with you post. If you remember you called me an idiot and clueless on my analysis of burrell during high pressure games. How many ncaa games does it take to make you reallize that my analysis was correct. i do know my xavier players. yes everyone....burrell folds under pressure and he was beyond awful. three turnovers, 2-6 shooting...one of the 6 shots he made was when there was no pressure left...they were so far behind they could not catch up at that point. Burrell, if you notice is too emotional and he lets his emotions hurt his game in high pressure situations. before this game, as i predicted, i knew brown was going to do well...he excells under pressure. So i don't know why it came as a big suprise to you that burrell, once again, was beyond awful...he was beyond awful in the last 5 ncaa games. i hope now you see that i do know my stuff...just becauce people don't like the truth that i state...and that may offend people...it doesn't change that it is the truth. By the way, i have played basktball with the likes of former nba players so i do know a little bit about b-ball. i love xavier...i have been following them for twenty years...and i know my stuff....next time i come up with an observation i hope that posters will see this .

<<So, if you want to knock the team.>>

I'm not "knocking the team", and I've said multiple times that this was a great season. I'm just very disappointed in last night's performance.

While watching the game, several people at the bar turned to me and said things like "why is your team playing scared? why do they have the jitters?", and I think there's something to that.

Look at some of our turnovers, our ballhandling, etc., and, for the first time in the tourney, it's like our guys were thinking about the enormity of the game. That's not unexpected in general, but I really thought that this team was passed that point, and so it was that much more disappointing.

So, please, understand that this WAS a very, very good season, and our players and coaches have a LOT to be proud of. But if you asked them "did X acquit itself well against UCLA?", I think their honest answer would be "no".

If someone hadn't watched any of our '04 NCAA games but only watched the Duke game, they'd come away saying that Xavier can play with the big boys. If that same person watched none of our '08 NCAA games but only last night's game, I'm not sure if they'd feel as strongly about the quality of our team and program, which is unfortunate.

Great season, bad last game. That's all I'm saying.

Xavier lost and that is it. 64 out of 65 teams in the tourney will have lost at the end. And after a few years few will even remember who won in 2008 if asked. Hey , who won in 1998,1999 and 2000...off the top of your head without looking it up? That was within the last decade. Xavier fans will remember this season as probably X's best overall season. Every season has ups and downs unless a team is undefeated for an entire season. Do we as fans wish they made the FF or won the whole tourney..sure we did. An Elite 8 finish is GREAT!! I will emphasis the positives of this season and not dwell on the few negatives. If you had been told before the season started Xavier would be at least an Elite 8 team what would most have said.....nothing positive I am sure. Suck it up and enjoy what we had...be positive.
