Musketeer Madness

The game last night would have been over much sooner had we made our free throws. Very uncharacteristic for this team to miss so many FT's, especially when we missed 4 from intentional fouls. I was glad Duncan made his at the end to secure a victory, but we need everyone to so their part, especially going into conference championship play and onto the tourney. I hope they are all doing about 200 FT's each right now

Yeah - definitely! As a team X shot nearly 10% worse than the worst player's season average... that's a funk, if I've ever seen one...

...and as we all know from the announcer of the game 2 weeks ago...

"The most important shot of a 1-and-1 is the first one."

each trip to the free throw line the player goes to shoot one. each attempt is a win or lose game.

Won't bother Miller at all. He'll have them all at the line overtime - while showing them how to do it.

Millersdad will bethere this week to make sure the toes are pointed correctly!

I believe it was an aberration. One started it and they all got infected. The good point about it is Jason Love made 5 of his last 6 foul shots in crunch time with 4 in a row to end the game.

Missing Free throws is simply a lack of concentration. We all saw that on Saturday the team was not concentrating on anything. I would like to think that it is b/c of the week off. I hope though that this was a wake up call. I will take a 10 point win as a wake up call rather than any loss any day. Don't worry about the free throw shooting it will be ok. 1 bad game does not constitute any sort of slump.

if missing free throws is simply a lack of concentration, I think many teams would shoot better than they do. Perhaps there is more to it than simple concentration. Perhaps fatigue may come into play. Perhaps there are other factors?

Back in 86 when Jim Boeheim (Bay-wine) was lamenting his team's inability to shoot free throws no matter what drill he tried or what teacher he hired, (pre-national championship of course) I had a nice interview with him and made this sugggestion:Try this drill Pete Gillen uses at the end of almost every practice--It's the Badin Free Throw Drill. "After an exhaustive scrimmage, each of the players on the team steps to a free throw line in front of one of the many baskets in the gym (two at a time). The Pete calls out: Player 7, "No time showing on the clock. Xavier down one. You're at the line for a 1-and 1. Make the first, game's tied. Make the second Xavier wins. Miss trhe first, Xavier loses. Shoot!
If the player makes both free throws and several of his teammates (always the worst free throw shooters on the team) follow suit, practice ends. If not, they start the drill all over again with different players of course.
Boeheim laughed and said, ""Hmmmmm, maybe I'll try that. I think we've done that but it can't hurt to try. "
I think his championship team years later had pretty good success at the line.
