KEEP BRIAN GREGORY

Postby Wisexuowl » Mon Feb 25, 2008 3:30 pm

I sure hope that those digruntled UD fans do get their way and UD keeps at any cost Brian Gregory as their coach.

They (the UD folks) say he has a contract until the end of the 2011-12 season, but nobody knows outside the inner circle if there is a buyout and for how much before then.

But I want him there for a long, long time.

Reason? Besides he can't coach, he really can't recruit.

After five years all he has is two quality grade "A" Division 1 Major college players in Roberts and Wright. And Roberts is his "senior class." The other two seniors who play, and start, Binnie and Sandoval, don't cut it.

He has one junior, Little, but in his third season he is very erratic at best. No other juniors to "win" with.

He has two sophomores, one I think has a big future (Johnson) and one Hueslman) who is a bust and can't play more than 20 minutes a game.

Yeah, I know, the UD faithful have been told the incoming class is another version of the Fab Five ... but they have been hearing that for five years.

UD is a sleeping giant, and if they dump Gregory and get themselves a hot young guy ... they could get to be "nasty" again ... so KEEP BRIAN FLYERS, KEEP BRIAN!

PS .. do you know they hired Brian on the fouth day after Ollie left, and was one of two people interviewed -- the other was Ollie's assistant. What a "search" for the right guy.

We should chip in 25 cents per MM'er and buy him a lapel pin reading "we beat pitt". somehow the guy had them at #14 in the nation and i think he was simply overwhelmed by it all. he blew a head gasket with all the pressure.

I would agree. This guy has not accomplished anything in 5 years. If Wright is healthy they're probably still an at large team but beyond Wright and Roberts they have nothing. If they're relying on freshman next year, they're going to struggle again.Miller has brought in players every year who can contribute within their first 2 years.

i don't think his recruiting has been that bad.

to say huelsman is a bust is not only unfair, but inaccurate.
the term bust would indicate we expected him to be a superstar who is contributing 15 pts and 10 rebounds at this point on his career. huelsman was not a five star recruit, so i think he has progressed about the way we have expected. this year he has shown marked improvement in his post moves. he needs to quit picking up so many cheap fouls and keep working and he'll be fine. he's never going to be a superstar, but i think he will continue to contribute.
gregory recruited roberts who will go down as one of the top 10 flyers of all time. he also recruited meachum who gets a fair amount of playing time at illinois; had he stuck around this team would be markedly better. roberts is so much more suited as a sg and had meachum stayed ud would have one of the top 2 or 3 combos in the conference. little had a solid year last year(6th man of year in conf) and has been hurt most of the conference schedule this year so it's hard to say what he would be contributing because of that. i don't believe his foot is 100% even now; he plays a lot more gingerly than before the injury.
marcus johnson has the chance to become one of the better guards in the league, his defense is solid and he attacks the basket well. he needs to do a michael redd and spend the entire summer working on his outside shot. chris wright, assuming his foot heals completely, will be a star in the a-10. next year's class should be his best yet. benson will contribute right away, as well as williams(who we all know is competing with redford for michigan's mr. basketball). fabrizius's game has been compared to your very own justin doelman, and chris johnson sounds like a bigger version of marcus johnson with a better outside shot. i know some recruiting services had this class as a top 30 at some point, but i haven't heard anything lately.

obviously gregory has had some misses, but then again most coaches do. binnie has been a disappointment, as were alvarez and plummer, who had some really nice games but couldn't stay out of trouble off the court. sandoval is way too inconsistent and makes too many bad decisions, when he lets the game come to him he is not bad but way too often he takes bad, forced shots.
london warren is the worst passing point guard i can ever remember at ud. lazy telegraphed passes and bad decisions are his mainstay. the only thing that keeps him on the floor is his defense and energy. he makes things happen - unfortunately half the time they are bad things.

gregory won't be fired after this year. the injuries and his best recruiting class(on paper) will keep him around for one more year. no matter what you guys say, had ud not had the injury bug they would still be a solid at large candidate and any talk of gregory being axed would not exist. insert stupid "well, ud obviously wasn't very good if a few injuries made their season spiral downhill" comments here:

ud was a pretty solid team before the injuries, just not a deep team. no way they lose at lasalle,gw, or even duquesne at home with wright and little at 100%. this team would be 20-6 and 8-5 in the league right now and in the field. that's why gregory will be around next year.

hopefully for your sake miller will be too. if iu comes calling i just can't see him saying no. if x does make a deep run in the ncaa's, he is going to be at the top of the list of every bcs school who has a coaching vacancy. iu is a top five type job, even with all the chaos, and i would be surprised if they want him that they won't get him.

Glad (?) you didn't keep your pledge Joey, but slip back to the real world for awhile.

Now you know that ... if and buts were candy and nuts, Flyer Fans would have a sweet Easter.

Yeah, look at the great recruits we've got coming in is a song you all have fell for over the past five years ....

Kurt was hailed as the stud inside guy who will dominate in the A-10. Now you think of him as a "contributor" and no, he ain't no better now than he was a year ago, and no, he can't go for more than 20 minutes a game. Sunday, when you all were making a run, he too himself out of the game. A real warrior.

But like I said ... PLEASE KEEP HIM! ...UD could be a plum job again ... but you gotta look at more than one guy in four days who is being sold to you by Kevin O"Neil!

gregory coached under izzo at msu - who i'm sure gave him a good recommendation.

you're dead wrong about huelsman. on a stack of bibles i swear i never read anyone who suggested huelsman was a stud who would dominate the a-10. more muskie hyperbole on your part. maybe one deranged ud fan visited this board and said that and you guys assume that all ud fans felt that way? on udpride, there were as many posters during huelsman's senior year who predicted he would be a bust than he would succeed. NO ONE ever suggested he would "dominate." fascinating how you refer to one stretch during the x-ud game as an indication of huelsman's entire sophmore season. i'm guessing you don't watch ud night in and night out, but i do and he has improved this year from last year. the one move he made against love(which left love looking silly) he wouldn't have even attempted last year. i even said i know he's never going to be a star, but he is serviceable. i am sure x has had many centers in the last twenty or so years who were just serviceable - no program has a ewing or alcindor every year.

about the recruits coming in, all i know is what i've read about them(except benson, who i've seen play in person)
and a few video clips here and there. what i have read about this class from IMPARTIAL recruiting services suggests this will be gregory's best class. all of this is on paper, wise, you know that as well as i do. maybe it'll be the worst class ever recruited in the history of cb. good to know x fans don't get excited about their incoming classes (sarcasm intended). some on here already have redford set to become the next steve alford or jj reddick. maybe he will, or maybe he will end up like johnny wolf, who knows? i'm sure there has been a time or two when an x fan on here lauded a recruit (odia) who ended up being(odia) a disappointment(odia). not that i would mention any by name.

this board never ceases to amaze me, i guess that's why i keep coming back for more.

Just when I think you are level-headed Joe you fall back a step or five.

Here's the difference in recruits.

Xavier fans get excited because we KNOW our recruits will perform in our system and under our coaching.

dayton fans get excited because anything is better than the garbage they keep throwing out on the floor. Bad coaching, system in shambles, etc.

So Odia was a bust, did it hold our program back? BR is the best player to hit the dump in years and he still hasn't produced an NCAA tournament appearance.
