Martelli's comments at Cintas???

Postby Xavier Nation » Sun Feb 10, 2008 3:08 pm

I stopped in the mens room after the game and the post game PA stuff was on and then all the sudden Martelli's voice came on swearing Burrell, something like " That GD Burrell makes the 3 every GD time we play them.." I could not believe that was being piped in...

from goxavier.com

"That God [darn] [Stanley] Burrell. Every God [darn] game he makes a shot against us. When does he graduate? I want to be here to make sure he graduates."

I thought it was funny.

I don't like St. Joe's but I have respect for their program and coach. I get the feeling they have the same opinion of us. His comments were amusing.

“Is there anybody here from the Xavier administration? Do you know when graduation is? That goddamn Burrell, every year, every goddam game makes a shot against us. He was averaging 7.5 points coming into the game in seven league games – or eight games. Doesn’t look like the same player, playing great defense. Dagger. I want to be here to make sure that sonofabitch gets out of here to be honest with you.”

Haha..i love it. Phil Martelli is a class act and Xavier and St. Joe's are the two most representative programs of what the A-10 is all about. I think Stanley Burrell is becoming my favorite X player of all time. I was watching him sit at the scorers table waving his towel, screaming his lungs out...he has an unbelievable passion for the game. It seems that when he gets pumped, the team and fans respond.

I want to go as far as saying that Martelli is the best coach in the A10, the guy can spot talent, and he can coach it. He has to compete with all 23 other Philly schools for the same recruits, and he never seems to get many big time recruits, yet his teams are always competitive. For as bad as the talent level is in the A10, Martelli is at least a BCS caliber coach.

I have alot of respect for the St Joes program and Martelli and I know he was trying to be funny but I did not think it appropriate for him to say, "I want to make sure that sonofbitch graduates". I felt this was wrong to say. He basically called Stan's mom a bitch. I think if he would have left that phrase out it would have been a bit more funny.

Coach Martelli embodies Philadelphia. If you haven't been to Philly, that quote might shock you. I bet even the priest that sits on their bench got a chuckle out of that one.
