our beloved piece of fly paper "stanley burrell" has drawn quite the ridicule from the slu fans, they thought he was, I'll paraphrase a lowely, classless piece.
I LOVE IT, living in stl this was my first time to see stan play d this year and he has really ratcheted it up. The second half was a let down all around...slu 46pts in a half? but as ugly as it got burrell was everywere, including in the face of 21 while lining up for a free throw. Its great to have a player that shows so much passion and heart and has an obvious love for playing D and also incites so much hatred among opposing fans.
me thinks its all the pack it in zone slu plays, the fans have no idea what real in your face man to man d looks like, stan really got them fired up, all game yelling about hand checks and body position...
fwi, an interesting note, slu fans see x as there rival, saying the hate us
where would they stand in our pecking order?
1 uc
2 ud
3 gw
4 st joe
5 miami
heck i wouldn't consider them even a remote rival, fact is X dominates the a10 the same way it did the MCC while slu was around, remeber the mcc championship at ud areana, x vs slu while they were on their way out of the mcc and "up" in the basketball world. ha
got the win, ruffled alot of feathers...lets take care of buisness Sunday

Re: Stanley last night
That is interesting they consider us their main rival. I hope they realize they are not even on our radar as far as rivalries go. Aren't there any teams in Missouri they could hate? St. Louis is at least 5 hours from Cincy isn't it? I don't think there are many rivalries with that much distance between the schools. Especially city schools.

Interesting. I do wonder who the other A10 teams see as their main rival. Maybe X is on top of many of the lists given our dominance in the league??

Re: Stanley last night
Good post so far on an interesting topic.
1. UC, but it has not been the same lately. I kind of liked them being so highly ranked all the time and us winning 50% of the games (or more). When you get the same Thuggery from UC, without all the wins, it always makes for an ugly game.
2. UD.....i guess. I'm not even sure I get this one. They haven't done anything in like 25 years. A big down stretch, followed by a .500 stretch with a few good years pepperred in. Maybe 3 NCAAs in that stretch. No wins. Hasn't won in Cincy forever, and their last bastion was the fact they they owned their home court for 15 years until David west took it from them. They are not even close to us.
3. SJU- probably the team that's been overall closest to us over the last 10 yrs in the A-10. Lots of tourneys, a super season, a POY, a good coach, and we've played some real meaningful A-10 games with them recently (including this sunday). I'd say were on top of this friendly rivalry.
4. Miami- It's fitting that this one is always played at the beginning of the year before it really matters. Some good games against 2 teams that's most common similarity is the fact that they are relatively close. A preppy public school in the sticks and an urban jesuit school in the hood. Just doesn't seem like a natural rivaly.
5. SLU...I think. If UC is our demographic opposite, then SLU is our demographic mirror image. For those that haven't been to both cities (i grew up there), STL and Cincy are VERY similar. The feel of XU and the feel of SLU are similar. they have made HUGE investment into their BBall program with the new stadium (think Cintas, but 10 yrs newer), and they dug the old fossil Majerus of retirement to be a springboard. They are gonna be good, and they view us as their benchmark. They beat twice when they were a rookie league member, and then they won the next one too. We've since pounded them pretty regularly, but last night they tried to reclaim their homecourt from us (almost did it too!). This will be bigger and bigger over the next several years.

Re: Stanley last night
they pounded us last year in stl and the year before...in fact x hadn't won in stl since something like 1990, but that is mis leading because we didn't play there for a decade.
seems like a fit, they certainly are not to fond of us but they have a long way to go as a program to even compete year in year out at the top level of the a10
we are everyone's rivals in the league, best team with the biggest nat profile that ventures into olean NY, dayton, richmond or saint louis
i still think with the contencious games with gw all the way back to the jarvis days put them at the top of our a10 rivals, well above stl, i don't like gw but stl? ...goodfor you, new coach new facility but admittingly a long way to go

This from fans that have Rick (I love to get nude and kill babies) Majerus as a coach and representative of their school?

I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

Re: Stanley last night
correct, X is on top and is everybody's superbowl. SLU's future will be interesting with a proven coach. SLU is always a threat on game day..XU84 wrote:Interesting.
