Xavier's best in-season tourney win

Andy Mac says the win over Memphis might be the best in-season tourney win since the 1978 Volunteer Classic. My favorite was last year's early statement game in the Chicago tournament over No 8 Indiana which I believe was the first ever win during the regular season over a then-ranked Big 6 team since that Volunteer Classic.

Does anyone remember us beating any other then-ranked Big 6 teams outside of an in-season tournament? I think there was a win over a ranked Providence in the late 1960s - anyone remember details about such a game?

This doesn't answer your question in the second paragraph, but XU's best-ever in-season Tournament championship was probably back in 1978-79 when the Muskies defeated 12th ranked Southern Cal the first night (75-68) and host, Tennessee, (51-50) in the championship game the following night. I am pretty sure that our own Nick (Terry) Daniels was the MVP of the Tourney that year.

Xavier was 4-2 going into the Tournament and wound up the year at 15-14 in Tay Baker's last year, losing to such powerhouse like Wheeling College and NKU.

Thank you, God, for Bob Staak!!!

Didn't we beat Louisville in the Preseason NIT when Jamal Walker passed off to THill for the winning basket? That was a big win.
