Teaching Freeze and McClain

Postby millerdad » Mon Nov 24, 2008 10:27 am

First of all I want to say a great game by XU and great coaching by Miller. I can only see the team getting better as the year progresses. With that said, I have a couple of suggestions for Miller and his staff that would improve Freeze and McClean. First of all Freeze. Freeze needs to learn to shoot lay ups with his left hand so he wont get blocked. I noticed this in 2 of the 3 games this tournment where Freeze shot his layup into his defender. If he would of used his left hand...the other side from where his defender was at...it would have not been blocked. The announcers on tv pointed this out also. Also for Freeze, he needs to work on not bringing the ball down when he catches it in the post. He had one knocked away doint this. David West was great at catching the ball in the post then putting it straight up into the basket with out dribbling it. I am sure coach Miller will work with Freeze on these moves this season...he should! Now for McClain. He needs serious work on his free throw shooting form. If you noticed in the game McClain would bend his knees to shoot, stop, then shoot the free throw using only his upper body...wrong big time!! When McClain bends his knees it needs to be one continous motion to shoot. This is very obvious and I hope that Miller and his staff point this out to him. They did a good job working with Love on improving his free throws this year and I hope they do it with McClean

Hey Pop ...
I betcha your son knows how to spell his players names.

It's FREASE.

It's McLEAN not McClain, and not McClean.

And it may just a bit too soon to compare David West's game with Kenny just five games into his college career.

Your right Owl Frease is a much better shot blocker than West. :D

Frease and McLean are right where we thought they would be--role players with great upside. This tournament was perfect for both of them and Holloway, as well.

Many times we make comparisons to other great X players, but for the most part we remember their last year not their first. David West, Tyrone Hill, Aaron Williams, Larry Sykes all had the same tendency to go up "soft" with layups and put-backs in their first year. It only takes a few blocks and some urging by the coaches to encourage the strong dunk at the rim to get them going. They are all used to being the tallest on the court, even in our first two games. They have never had guys their size and strength defending them. I think after the first of the year (or before) we will see a different Kenny Frease. Those blocks will turn into fouls.
