Congrats and best of luck to Coach Steele.

A man of integrity who worked his tail off for our university. Sad it didnt work out here, but confident he will get things rolling in Oxford.

Do any of his Xavier players follow him to Oxford?

I’d be surprised if anyone follows him. I think Miles would be a good fit there and he has three years of eligibility, but Travis did not give him a great deal of playing time at X. Ky Ky would be in the same situation.

If Fremantle left, Travis would take him for sure and he has two years left. I think there is a rule that you can’t transfer within the Big East, so Miami or like school on the east coast would probably be a good choice—Iona, Rutgers, St. Peter’s or one of the Philly schools.

We also have Tucker with four years and the Tennessee transfer Hercy Miller, who is a walk-on. Either of those might leave, but from what has been rumored elsewhere, Tucker will probably end up wherever Hayes goes. I don’t know anything about Miller other than he signed an endorsement deal for 2 mil and had D-1 offers!

My gut feeling is most will stay. That might cause a log jam with the number on scholarship for next year because of the Covid extra/free year. Not sure if the free year counts against the scholarship limit of 13.

Good luck to Travis, Who is a good recruiter. He could have stayed out of basketball for a year and enjoyed his payout, but he loves basketball.

I feel he is best suited as being on the bench as mainly a recruiter but not a coach. He was too much of a players coach and his teams took on the personality of him and they were soft. I wish him well but still don’t think he is head coach material at the D1 level. I’m sure he was in full used car salesman mode when talking to him. I think Miles should go with him and he can be the MAC defensive player of the year.

Hops,

The next time you pay a compliment to Steele will be your first. He was not up to the task of coaching a high caliber team, in a very high caliber league, but I wish him all the success at Miami. Good man.

Pleased that Coach Steele landed the Miami RedHawks job.

He deserved the opportunity at X, and while it did not work, he has probably learned a considerable amount over the last four years. Coach Miller referenced how he believes experience will make him even a better coach than his first run at X. Hoping that also holds true for Coach Steele with his new home.

May Coach Steele win the MAC’s “Coach of the Year” award for the 2022-23 Season.

Very nice post. Thank you.

I will be purchasing a couple Redhawks season tickets to support Travis and team when they don't conflict with X.

Travis is a first class guy and I appreciate his hardwork and loyalty to our program over the years.

I respectfully disagree that TS deserved the Xavier job. If loyalty is your only criteria, than maybe he deserved the job, but if winning basketball is your criteria, it was completely the wrong decision, as I pointed out the day he was hired. He had never even been head coach of a grade school team and to then start your coaching career in a power conference was a no win situation for him and X. If he had been head coach at Miami for 4 years and then came to X he might have succeeded. There are very few instances of asst. coaches succeeding at power conferences. You can do it in the Mac, A-10, Horizon etc., but it's rare in the big conferences. Look at the Big East this year. Every coach (6) that made the NCAA had been a head coach at a smaller school before getting the Big East job. Other schools sometimes make the same mistake as we did. Chris Mullin, Patrick Ewing, WoJo to name a few. St. John and Marquette then hired a coach who had been a head coach prior. Georgetown will probably do the same down the road.
