Greatest comeback game ever for Xavier was ???

Postby Xavier2005 » Sun Jan 30, 2022 11:37 am

The Creighton vs Xavier game on January 29, 2022 with that 29-2 run at the beginning of the second half may may be the best "comeback" game ever by a Xavier team. What do you think? Can you come up with a larger deficit game and comeback win by Xavier? The only other game I can think of was Xavier vs Louisville in the NCAA tournament in 2004 in Orlando , First Round. Louisville lead at the half 42-31. Xavier game out smoking in the second half and outscored Louisville 49-28 to defeat Louisville 80 to 70. That team of Myles, Cage, Doellman, Sato, and Chalmers went on to the Elite 8 in Atlanta and lost to Duke by only 3 points. The comeback over Louisville was a dominating second half for Xavier. Any other major comeback games??? I was at all those games !!!! Hard to forget 2004!!!

Per ESPN, we came back from down 22 against East Tennessee State in December of 2017. This year's Creighton team is much better than that year's ETSU. In addition, that was a home game for us and we only won it by 2. IMO it is a bit more excusable to go down 19 against Creighton at their place and much more impressive to fight back and win by 10. So while not the biggest comeback in school history in terms of point deficit, probably the biggest turn around from first to second half ever.

Fun fact that 2017-18 X team went on to win the Big East regular season and earn a one seed.

I do not know if we have the talent and depth of that team. But one thing I do know from Big East play is that this current team does not give up and should never be counted out until the buzzer rings.

I believe we were down 16 to Purdue at home with 4/5 minutes left in the game. Many people started leaving when Tu Holloway went crazy and we won. Our 29-2 run yesterday was unbelievable especially playing in Omaha. When the NCAA put in the 3Pt line and the shot clock, there is always a chance. Can’t leave early.

No need for. A “Great comeback” if there was not a pathetic “fall behind.”
How can a team that is not completely outclassed by their opponents superior talent start the game be so flat that it appears to not care?
If the halftime suggestion to “have fun” with game in the 2d half was enough to shake this team to the reality that greater effort & better performance was needed, then the coaching staff as well as the players did not appreciate level of intensity is required. They also must not have understood the teams lackadaisical attitude.
It is time to wake up if they don’t want another mediocre season.

I was at the game and I think Bluiett hit a three and was fouled for a four point play?

if you're referring to the ESTU game, i believe that's correct. i was at that game as well. i'm not sure it was the "winning" basket. i thought he just hit a random wing jumper off an OB play with like under 10 seconds to get us the win. maybe i'm wrong.

the Purdue game may have been the most improbable just because of the sheer time and what we were down. 17 at half vs CU and 16 with like 5-6 minutes left are completely different.

Remember Bluiett''s 4-point play to win a game. But do not think that was ETSU. Wasn't that a Big East game?

Against ETSU, we were down five with 1:30 to go, 66-61. We then finished on a 7-0 run. Goodin made a layup, Kanter hit a corner three, assisted by Goodin. And Bluiett gave us the lead with a mid-range jumper. Up two points with 7 to go, Mack headed the advice of some on Musketeer Madness and fouled ETSU three times in a row to run down the clock and force a hail mary three at the buzzer.

Against Purdue, we were down 55-36 with 10:44 left. The final score was 63-66. So we outscored Purdue 30-8 in the final 10:44. Although that was at home, Purdue was solid that year and won a game in the tournament. That was an amazing performance by Holloway. He it three threes in a row in the final 2 minutes.

It may not be the greatest comeback in Xavier history, but I remember playing Princeton in I believe 1999 in the NIT for a ticket to NYC in the dirty, smelly, roach motel known as The Cincinnati Gardens. Bill Carmody was the Princeton coach, and they ran that pain in the neck offense with essentially a non-D-1 roster. Although their center, Chris Young, did go on to a long MLB career as a pitcher with various teams, they had nothing approaching Xavier’s athletes. In the first half Xavier was completely befuddled by the back door cuts and ball screens. Princeton had us by about 14, mostly on uncontested lay ups. The first half was so bad that I forgot that I was a gentleman and stood on my chair as the boys went to locker room and yelled, “You are losing to a f-ing high school team.”

I do not know what St. Skip said to them at half time, but over the course of the second half the lead evaporated (Lenny Brown was unstoppable, he could have hit a three from the muddy parking lot across the street), and Xavier won to go on to New York. What a game!
