Ok, next to last trip down memory lane. Nov 9 is almost upon us, thank goodness.
Official program of the Oct 8, 1966 UC-X football game at Nippert Stadium (which we WON 25-13).
Stadium (field?) was dedicated in 1903 but with no stands! "Seats were laid out on the surrounding hills." (Probably no luxury boxes either). It now (1966) can handle crowds of up to 30,000. (since enlarged to 40k).
The UC President states, "The 1966 Bearcat squad appears to be made up of unusually able young men, eager to give a good account of themselves. It is coached by competent instructors who stress character and academic proficiency as well as athletic skilled and the will to win."(see how times have changed!)
Charles "Chuck" Studley was coach of the Bearkittens with a stellar 24-26 overall record.
24 Muskies had their photos in the program and the scouting report of our beloved Muskies included: "Ed Biles as head coach 23-15-2 overall. Put great emphasis on passing game, unbalanced wing attack, with the split end to the wing back side. Defense, operates out of an Oklahoma defense with 5 lineman, 2 linebackers and 2 defensive safeties. (I'm assuming they wanted us to spot them 10 points also besides the 2 missing players) Also, "Williams likes to sprint out, throw the quick outs or throw the long "bomb" (pass) ((they had to explain it)) to Abramowicz . Williams is a double threat. Zelina will give the Muskies a lot of running depth from the ***** slot."
Wish I could tell you more about the game, but can't dig anything up. I think it was the game where we did a reverse on the opening kickoff. Biles was known to have a trick play or two. Anyway at that time UC lead the series 13-9 with all games being played at Nippert to accommodate the "crowd." ( the series ended 19-11, as things went down hill for X after Biles left. The '65 game (which we also won) had 24,109 in attendance at this football crazed rivalry. However, like bball in the recent past, (since 1960) X held a 4-2 advantage and this made it 5-2!
Ok my last one will be on the Xavier News again and include our heart breaking lost to those damn bear kittens
