OK, I knew we all needed a break from these and dam, this off season can't end quick enuff so we can all start talking Xavier Basketball!

But today I'm going to go back in time about $$. If you watch or read the business news, the topic de jour is INFLATION! Well let's see how Xavier's cost have risen since back in the day.

In a February 12, 1963 letter a statement from the "Very Reverend Paul L. O'Connor said, "It should be noted that even with the increase in effect, Xavier's charges for tuition and fees compare favorably with those of other private institutions offering similar quality education." (ROFL!)

In a November 11, 1964 letter, Xavier raised room and board costs (my poor parents! They asked me to pay expenses but they paid, room, board and tuition. (God bless them, because they didn't have money) Dorms went from $125 a semester to $140 (Husman was primo at $160) and 3 squares, 5 days a week went from $115-125 to $130-140 (range??) Never made it to breakfast and paying my own expenses meant, Mug Club, Dana's and weekend food.

Finally, the last increase letter my parents kept, or that I could find anyway was when they raised tuition from from $25 to $30 a semester hour beginning with the fall semester 1965.

What's it cost now? I googled, tuition $21,230 per semester, room and board $6,790 a semester = $28,020 or $56,040 per year!! Now that's INFLATION!!

I recall paying 27 per credit in 1968... I paid my way through because Mom and Dad had 8 others to provide for and I had a job from the time I was 7. I remember it was $33 by the time I graduated BTW did you know Tom Jones or Jim Korb, Korb was a running back for X

I knew a lot of the players cuz I lived in Brockman basement my freshman yr. But didn’t know either of those guys.

Great topic! Looking back on my Xavier years I have a new appreciation for classmates/ students who worked and paid their own way! My parents in no way could afford the tab as dad was a fireman and mom a homemaker. Xavier granted me a full scholarship for 4 years guaranteed!! I absolutely thank the Jesuit community and coach Ed Biles for this offer. I guess at the time as an18-21 year old I did not totally appreciate this wonderful contract. I got to do something I absolutely LOVED and got paid to do it. Thank you Xavier!! If anyone here had DocLink for Econ you knew his humor and sarcasm....He called me Abe "So Abe you enjoying the free ride and the cash big brother NFL star Danny is sending your way?? Isn't capitalism great?" Loved that guy!! I take issue with today's situation where athletes can get paid huge amounts for using their name while in college. Do they not see the value of a $56,000 x 4= $224,000 package to do what they love.....What is a degree worth in future earnings? But again its Capitalism and I'm for market value!! Go X

Doc Link was a piece of work! Truly, one of a kind, teaching at Xavier "The Harvard of the midwest!"

Loved Dr. Links class on Econ…or as we dubbed it, How to make a Million in the Stock Market. Truly a unique and wonderful guy.

And I wasn’t an Econ major either, his was only the only true Econ class I took. Although I did take some economics/history courses that could be used either way.

Linkenomics!! Things I remember: He would go nuts if you showed up for class without socks which was the style at the time!! He would leave the room during tests and about every 5 minutes look through the glass ! Showed movies of the Nazi war crimes as he was a reporter for the newspaper Stars and Stripes. Absolutely loved our country and its freedom and capitalistic system. Seems like everything he said was practical and you could take it with you into the real world. "Never purchase a house thats more the 3 times your annual earnings. Remember your house is your home not an investment. Though it may turn out to be a great investment also. He dressed to the max!!

Never took a class for Doc Link but had a lot of interaction with him and learned somethings I still use today when I am teaching. My favorite was three ways to become rich...OPM was the best

1962 to 1966 The OSU in Columbus Ohio $125 a quarter times 3 or $375 a year plus cost of books and or living expenses. Paid it all myself. The OSU in 2021 per year for tuition only runs about $10,000 to $12,000 per year plus books, plus dorm or living expenses. State schools obviously less costly than private schools. (i think the wages in the early 1960s was about $1.00 an hour for young college students)
