How can Oden be a 4 star recruit at # 44 nationally, and our latest signing be a 4 star and be ranked #140?

a few things:
1) 2020 rankings are very fluid at this point
2) there are a TON of 4 star recruits
3) CURRENTLY, Wicher is ranked 113 nationally and Odom is ranked 116 by 247Sports.com. So it depends on the recruiting service too.

On the 247 Sports recruiting site, each recruit is given two seperate rankings. One of those is the 247 Sports rankings, which is put together purely by the 247 Staff. The other ranking, The 247 Sports Composite, is a compilation of several of the larger ranking services i.e. Rivals, ESPN, etc.
The problem with the 247 Sports Composite, is many times one of those larger services may not have seen/evaluated the player, and hence, they are penalized. There's a reason why there is such a large disparity with Odoms' ranking (#116/#44). The #116 is his Composite, and it is so high as he has not been evaluated by all of the ranking services.
The 247 Sports, not the 247 Composite, is the most reliable and definitive ranking system IMHO.
