Always easy to be critical of the officials, I certainly have been. That said, it is the most difficult sport to officiate given the speed, unpredictability, and athleticism. With each of these close games, one has to look at many other plays during the game that also had an impact on a close game.

I think the great news in the Big East this year is the parody leading to many close and entertaining games. Stressful to all involved but a great product. The Big East Tournament should be a great event again this year.

I think that one of the problems is also that you have three guys in their fifties or early sixties, not appearing too aerobically fit, trying to keep up with athletes in their prime. Add in the obvious decision to ignore any traveling when moving to the basket, and you have a perfect recipe for fan discontent

Add to that all the old guys with bifocals like me that think they are experts.

Who is the gray haired guy that always does our games and other big east games? He calls way to many calls and most of them he is 30 feet away. He is terrible

If you are referring to Tim Higgins, he retired three years ago with a few other of the old timers.

One of my favorite remembrances of Tim Higgins goes back to January, 2010 when Tim Higgins kept huffing and puffing at the end of the Xavier- Dayton game. Seem to recall the X clock would automatically stop upon a whistle. Higgins was breathing so hard he kept inadvertently tooting, stopping the clock. Most thought the clock operator was to blame. It was Higgins, trying to officiate well past his prime, who was disrupting the game.

Some years back, I was ref at a high school wrestling tourney. In one of the matches I was doing, I was down on the mat watching a wrestlers shoulders and getting ready to call a pin. The wrestler on the bottom moved, the wrestler on top flip over and kicked me squarely in the head....which caused me to blow the whistle inadvertently.

It was slightly embaressing.

This must be because of Muskieman
funny that you would say that because I am always on refs but many come over and have talked to me after years of abuse. They appreciate I don't curse them like you and AH do. A few years ago Gene Steratore made a call in a game right in front of me and when he went by I told him to check the rulebook and to my surprise he came out after half time and told me that I had been right. He also went by me one time as I was giving him "advice" and he turned and backpedaled yelling back "what did I do now". I told him he forgot his contacts and his retort was "I don't wear contacts" so I offered him my glasses that was the first time I saw a refs lose it laughing. Drendo and passthepuck can verify my antics. I respected him and a number of refs because they didn't let the game get to him and when Gene was wrong he admitted it. Now if we could just get skyhops to do that.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.
