Big T Jones

Postby PaulHickey » Thu Feb 01, 2018 8:35 am

I noticed his playing time has significantly decreased. Only 5 minutes against SJU. What is happening here - injury, luke-warm effort in practice, academics? Xavier definitely needs him down the stretch. Hmmmm.....

Go Xavier!

I’m not sure they need much out of him with Kanter and O’Mara playing well. Jone’s game has not progressed much especially offensively. We will definitely need him next year.

He is a great rebounder but outside of a dunk, he has no real offensive post moves and he cant make a FT. Agree with Hops as they don't need him as much with Kanter and O'mara but he will be needed if there is foul trouble or an off-night I just hope he stays patient. Like Hardin, they will get their opportunity next year. Hardin will be a good player for X.

It wouldn’t surprise me to find out that he has a knee bothering him, but I’ve nothing to base that on other than last year.

Against SJU it was simply a matter of matchup. The latter part of the 2nd half X had NO center on the court, and Gates was the biggest player out there. In some of the other games it was a matter of Kanter or SOM having good games and just going with the hot hand. Will be interesting to see what kind of lineup is used at Gtown. Jones might get a lot of playing time, but who knows? X hasn’t played them yet this year so there is no way of knowing who will or who won’t be effective against them yet.

By far the best athlete of the 3 bigs, but has by far the worst footwork.

Great topic actually. T-Jones is arguably our best post defender and has done a nice job of reducing his fouls per minute avg this season. That said, he is our worst offensive option aside from his O-rebounding talents - ( which ain't bad).
My gripe with Basketball Jones is that he seems to feel some odd pressure to score every time he gets fed on a post-up. He has to learn when he has a good situation and is relatively close to the basket, and when he is not and needs to pass it quickly back out. If he is currently our worst post option, then we are not sitting that badly.

He went from starting about 15 games to very little time per game as Kanter developed his full potential. Still think he's our best big defender.
When he gets ball in the post he is looking to shoot and usually ignoring passing to an open man. He may still shine again this season.

Spot on.

He seemed much more posied earlier in the year. He is fumbling the ball and traveling more, and isn't passing out of the post like Kantner and O'Mara do. J Love improved leaps and bounds with his footwork from his sophomore to senior year. I hope T Jones goes to a similar big man's camp. He will have to log double the minutes next year, I suspect.
