The Muskies' domination of Marquette last evening brought back memories of the second round of the 2011 Dance in Cleveland. X that year was led by Tu Holloway and Mark Lyons. X was favored to beat Marquette. But in that game Marquette smothered our two headed, small guard attack by guarding them with bigger, very physical athletic Big East style guards. Marquette was able to send the Muskies home with an upset win over X.

Last night X got revenge! The big physical Xavier guards Quentin Goodin, Naji Marshall, and Paul Scruggs were able to all but shut down the usual potent 3 point attack by Andrew Rowsey and Markus Howard. Granted Howard scored a ton of points, but not by the usual flurry of 3's, but by driving the paint and getting hard fought 2's on mid-range runners and rain drop floaters. X was happy to trade 2's for the usual 3's all evening!

REVENGE IS SWEET, even though it took 7 years to get it!

30+ points is 30 points. I'm sure that X isn't happy with giving up points whether it is from 3, 2, or the foul line. X did a great job on Rowsey who put up 31 against X at Marquette but I doubt anyone feels good about the output by Howard. Having said that, he is a great player. I think X was lucky he got in foul trouble in the first game. X did a real good job against him in the 2nd half though. All in all, X played a great game. Tre had a great stretch to help increase the lead but overall, everyone contributed greatly. That is my biggest takeaway. X blew them out without having huge games from Tre, JP, or Kaiser. Good sign

Howard should have fouled out this game. I was at the game in 206, and I got the impression he was pushing off a lot, but I couldn't really tell. Then I went home and watched the recording. Not only was he pushing off constantly on offense, but he had a number of uncalled reach-in fouls, especially the time he nearly knocked Q down when they called it out on Q under the basket in the second half. I think the refs were enjoying his talent so much that the never saw his fouls.

I saw him foul a bit but honestly, i see X foul quite a bit too. In all honesty, Tre puts up the heisman every time he gets pressure while dribbling. I always worry that he will get a cheap offensive foul. Great players will get those breaks.
