Rivalry Basketball Gone

Call me a sentimental old fool if you wish, but miss the G-olden Days of 1 bid per league, no conference tourneys & local rivalries. Money rules everything now & Conference Championships take a back seat to "Tourney Success". We became the very thing I disliked about Kentucky, Ohio St and others. I miss playing Miami Oh & Dayton - home or away. I wish we scheduled them & NKU annually. Instead we play ETSU, Marshall, Lehigh, etc... with no local ties to any of these programs.

You can’t be serious? Miami OH? NKU? you want to play home and home? We are a MAJOR now.. What a great schedule we have with home and homes with Big East teams. Do you want to go back to being a mid major? I’m sure we would be glad to play any of the teams you mention as a “buy game”. “Maybe not Dayton”. Chris says we are not likely to play them during the regular season. Maybe you would like to go back to playing Bellarmine and Thomas More?

XU and Harry I think you are both right. Money does drive this game! As well as us. That being said we can thank ESPN in the late 70's AND early 80's for all of this. Yes those rivalries you were and are speaking of were great and I miss those days and games as well. What about the rivalry games against Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and of course Evansville. Those of us who remember the late 70's and the MCC days sure do remember THOSE games but I for one would MUCH rather see the likes of Villanova, Seton Hall then likes of OKCU or ORU coming into XU.

Appreciate responses which beats ignoring the thread. My point was we relish the Big East, but fill our non-conference schedule of about 12 games with 3 local schools - NKU, Miami & Dayton. Kentucky avoids other Ky schools unless they play at home once in awhile. Playing Louisville pushed by KY Legislators & benefits both schools. Ohio St avoids UC, Dayton, Xavier etc... except throwing one of them a bone once per decade at their place. These are the things that turn me very sour against those BIG SCHOOLS. I just thought we were better than to snub our noses at others. Even now Duke, Kansas, N C snub their noses at playing us at our place or anywhere. To those XU fans from the early 80s & before - We have become what we hated then. Thanks for ANY opinions on this.

Ahh - I also love taking my model T out on a Sunday afternoon and feeling the wind in my locks while watching the world pass me by. Oh the days of apple pan dandy, fresh lemonade, what a hotsy totsy.
C'mon man! There are a plethora of programs that would switch places with us in a heartbeat. Xavier has become a power program not by accident. Ask the chumps up 75 how their season is going - the A10 ranks #10 in the RPI. Xavier competes at the highest level of college hoops year in and year out.
I hear what you're saying - the money in hoops, the scheduling. It is what it is. Carpe diem brother - enjoy the ride in our 1970 Buick GS Stage one

Would love to see Home and Home series set up with OSU, Indiana, UK, UL, UT, etc. Dayton, Miami, NKU....not so much. What good would it do from X to play those 3 schools regularly now? They don’t need them in order to stimulate interest in the games and they certainly wouldn’t be a boon to recruiting or to RPI. Playing schools, even smaller ones, from OTHER parts of the country is a better way to promote X on a NATIONAL basis, than just playing regional rivals. And not just for drawing basketball recruits, but also for helping to increase interest from potential students in those areas.

Actually X has played Miami University a total of 5 times during Coach Mack's tenure - 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2016.
In 2016, X played NKU, Wright St and UD ( in tournament ).
I'm fine with playing those schools as long as they are at Cintas. See no advantage of having a home and home series.
After we are The Xavier University.

First, our win at Northern Iowa was great.
Our recent out of conference scheduling has been terrific. We can get in the tourney with a 9-9 conference mark due to a strong schedule. We can get a 2 seed when we put both an OOC schedule and conference wins together. Each year, it seems like our OOC schedule includes a mixture of teams and looks that allow us to prepare especially for the tourney. We've been in the top 10 RPI due in a large part to scheduling decent teams in the OOC who go on to win within their conferences. Finally, our OOC schedule has allowed several of freshman to develop before the Big East.
Totally respect where we have come from. I always tried to keep track of the mythical Miami Valley trophy winner. But when you have a rivalry with each and every Big East team, each and every game ... when you walk around MSG and see the mutual respect for each of the teams ... and yet it's a battle come game time. We really have it so very good.
