Postby xu koop scoop » Wed Dec 27, 2017 11:31 am

MINUTES PER GAME (rounded off): Tre 33, Q 28, JP 27, Gates 27, Jones 18, Naji 18, Scruggs 17, Kantner 15, SOM 15. 9 guys at 15 MPG probably a 1st. The 3 Bigs avg 48 MPG . PPG rounded: Tre 20,, JP 12, Jones 9+, Gates 9+., Kantner 9. Naji 8, SOM 8, Q 7+, Scruggs 4+. Only 2 avg double figures (Marquette has 3 tonight avg 15 or more). REBOUNDS: Jones 78, Tre 71, Gates 67, Kantner 66. BLOCKS: Jones 12, SOM 9, Tre 6. STEALS: JP 20, Q 11, Tre 9. ASSIST/TO : Q 79/32. JP 36/20. Tre 35/26.
Scruggs 18/22. Note Tre does it all, even his 26 TO offset by 35 Ass. JP sure can steal the ball.

The A/TO ratio needs to end. The logic is flawed and makes carelessness excusable. Getting assists does not require risky passes and risky passes should be analyzed on a probability basis. If the player is doing the analysis properly he will have very few turnovers but still have plenty of assists. Team assists would be higher but individual assists could be lower.

I think the other aspect of that ratio is that those with more assists likely have the ball in their hands longer and therefore will have more turnovers. That is generally true but you can better base this on turnovers per minute the player holds the ball.

The key to turnovers is that players should be motivated to get the ball back on the defensive end. You don't offset a turnover with an assist, you offset it with a steal, block or rebound. Only the steal or forcing a turnover is a direct offset but the others are preventing points or extending possessions.

a lot of time a good pass that is fumbled or just plain missed is also an TO but is not the fault of the passer.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

If the pass is missed then I assume a TO for the passer which may or may not be his fault. If the pass is fumbled I would think it is a TO for the recipient but I'm not aware of the official rule. In reality it should be a subjective call because the pass could put the player in an unreasonable position to catch it but could also be a blown play by the "receiver".

Mack has mentioned in the past how some of the TOs for the guards are really the fault of the big guys.
