Why doesn't Mack call plays in the course of the game, not just timeouts?

It's been driven home countless times by tv commentators that Mack is excellent at calling plays during timeouts that result in baskets, that he's great at Xs and Os. So why doesn't he call them during open play? Do coaches not do this? If not, why?

Pierre watch the games and see the plays run. What do you want the radio guy to say....there is a play Chris had the guys run, there is another play Chris had them run and then another and another and another. Sometimes the plays are run correctly and like football games sometimes the called plays are not run properly. Wake up Pierre
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

unless it's a timeout, i'm pretty sure he just sits there and doesn't yell or say anything. he just lets them do whatever they want.

Dont want this site failing. Love reading posts as we rv thru fla all winter & attend games-tourneys in fla.mack does call plays & part of problem may be lack of a great asst coach helping. We usually have our nxt coach ready as often our top asst coach is good enuf to take over the program.

I wonder why, near the end of the game, Coach Mack called all those plays that were designed to have Marquette force turnovers that invariably turned into points. It's all Coach Mack's fault for calling such plays. He should only call for plays near the end of the game without the designed turnovers included! Those should be saved for earlier in the game so that we have time to forget about them.

Yeah, okay, right Muskienick, this is my kind of comedy. Designed Turnovers indeed! They sure had 'em down cold didn't they? Looked for all the world like Butler was really stealing the ball! All six times.
