Coaches do not win or lose games

Postby Xavier2005 » Mon Feb 27, 2017 9:04 am

Certainly coaches have an impact on games by their coaching and decision making. But the players play the game on the court and decide the winning and losing by their game actions. Maybe, it is a combination of both coaching and players interacting. Whatever....this group is lacking in the ability to get the job done by winning games. The last major loss streak in 2012 for X had the same coach..just different players.

The coaches recruit players and the teams typically resemble the coach and coaching staff on the court. The continued lapse of judgement and careless play has to responsibility of both. You cannot go four straight possessions at home without a shot and expect to win.

The team with better players usually wins the game. Butler has better players and may be better coaches. This Butler team is now playing a lot better than the one I saw in Jan in Indy. Can't blame season ending injuries on the coach but not sure what happened with Myles? I still think we can beat Marquette and DePaul and hopefully still make the Dance.

Heard a long time ago that a good D-1 coach may account for no more than 2 victories in a given season. No mention of how many losses a weaker coach affects.
Having said that, it was clear to me yesterday that Mack held Goodin out about two minutes too long late in the game (from about 7:30 to 3:30) due to fouls. It was during those two minutes that the crucial turnovers happened.
Impossible to say if that wouldn't have happened anyways but it appeared to me to be questionable.. Goodin came back in around the 3:30 mark, but it was over by that time.

Not correct. 2:30 to play. Butler was up by 2 and X had the ball. It was far from over . . . until X turned it over on three straight possessions and Butler scored on each turn over. Really hard to second guess coach for sitting Goodin when he did. If he fouled out, we were toast for sure. Hell, even with him, it was at best a toss up.
